Latvian theatre in USA and Canada
The book treats of Latvian emigrant actors and play
directors and their professional pursuits in their host coun¬
tries USA and Canada.
Towards the end of World War II, when the Soviet armies
moved into Latvia around
150.000
Latvians, fearing that the
large scale deportations (of
1941)
would be repeated, fled to
Germany (a couple thousand to Sweden).
At the end of the fourties
-
beginning of fifties the re¬
fugee camps in Germany were liquidated, so many Latvians
having secured work offers with sponsors, emigrated to USA
and Canada. Among these emigrants were a large number
of actors and play directors, who had formed theatre groups
in the refugee camps mostly in American and English oc¬
cupation zones. Best known were those of
Esslingen
and
Meerbeck.
Somehow those theatre activists settled on the USA
East Coast around New York. Having had experience they
enthusiastically started forming Latvian theatres in their
new country. The New York Latvian theatre opened doors
already in
1945,
the Boston theatre slightly later. In
1946
both joined, though keeping separate ensembles. Both were
joined by outstanding actors and play directors and stage
designers from independent Latvia s theatres. Thus these
785
786
two theatres from the start could present performances on
professional level.
These two leading theatres performed plays by Latvian
classical authors like R. Blaumanis, Rainis and Brigadere,
but also by the very talented midtwentieth century play¬
wrights Martins
Zïverts
and
Anšlavs
Eglïtis,
both of whom
in Soviet Latvia were forbidden. Eventually their repertories
were enriched with plays by a younger generation of play¬
wrights, like
V. Kärkliriš, T. Zeltinš
and
R.
Staprãns.
Besides those two East Coast theatres, wherever a
sufficiently large Latvian emigrant group had settled,
they established a theatre, like in Chicago, Grand Rapids,
Minneapolis, Los Angeles. Most of them remained of local
importance (which means, their groups did not take their
productions on tours).
However the most important of all USA Latvian theatres
is The Little Theatre of San Francisco , established in
1966,
under leadership of Laimonis
Silinš
has continued to pre¬
sent plays on professional level practically till today. Some
of his productions were even shown in Latvia.
A much smaller number of professional actors had settled
in Canada. The first Latvian theatre there was established
in Montreal. However, it was Toronto that became the center
of Latvian theatre arts, for a while even with four theatre
groups, the most important of them being the theatre of
Daugavas Vanagi.
When at the end of the 20th century Latvia regained
its independence, Latvian theatre group activities in USA
and Canada gradually ceased. The professional actors had
grown old, or died, but young ones lacked adequate Lat¬
vian language skills. Also professional theatre (and on high
level) was now available in Latvia.
Yet, for fifty years Latvian theatre in USA and Canada
had helped several generations of Latvians to survive spi¬
ritually and to retain their national identity.
A chronological survey of plays presented by Latvian
theatre groups in USA and Canada is added at the end of
the book.
