Industrial clusters are an increasingly important form of industrial organization
in Africa and this book is the first to analyse their role and impact in various
sectors and levels of economic development in Africa.
This book improves our understanding of how industrial clusters in Africa can
be transformed into local systems of innovation and how these clusters can be
better connected to global actors. The authors draw out implications for policy and
practice and provide guidance to governments, private sector associations and
non-governmental organizations. They show that policies must be specifically
designed for local realities, and that any theoretical framework for analysing
innovation in clusters needs to closely reflect the role of policy, the State, types
of institutions and the nature and distribution of power.
