Testimony of the Opera
Fidelio
by
Ludwig
van Beethoven
at the Background of Transformations
of the European Consciousness
at the Turn of the 19th Century
The book intends to provide a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the musical and dramatic work of the last of the
Vienna classics, the work, which
-
for many reasons
-
has not been present in Polish scholarly reflection. Additionally, the
purpose of the book is to verify, on the one hand, the stereotypical notions of the European culture of the turn of the 19th century,
often looked at from the perspective of the Enlightenment heritage and through the prism of high culture, and, on the other hand, to
define the place of
Fidelio
in culture, as one of the representative compositions of an operatic theatre, the work
-
it must be added
-
often treated, while being studied, in a stereotypical and superficial way, as the so-called revolutionary opera or rescue opera.
Another important, preliminary assumption concerned the question of social and theatrical intcrdependencies of the genre
itself.
Fidelio,
being a French comic opera, which is a special kind of a popular theatre
-
due to its nature oriented toward the
inclusion of the expectations of the audience
-
referred to legible and clearly formulated ideas, representative of the bourgeois
vision of the world.
The elaboration of a methodological conception, offering an opportunity to study this bourgeois vision of the world at the
level of genre, forms the contents of the first part of the book entitled Around a Method. Referring, on the one hand, to research
of the French school
Annales ,
which is involved in the study of history of idealistic and mental transformations in culture and
defines them by the term
mentalité,
whereas on the other hand, making use of such methods of analysis of an artistic text, which
are designed to reach a deep layer of the work , containing its intention (intentio operis), it has been established what picture of
consciousness is
acatei
by the most significant elements of the opera s libretto
-
the plots, motifs,
topoi,
symbols
-
and to what
extent this picture overlaps with the findings regarding
mentalité
of the end of the 18th century.
The second part of the book deals with the analysis of the French prototype of the libretto
Lèonore ou
I amour conjugal by
Jean Bouilly. It has been determined that because of the time of its creation and a propagandist function which conditioned the
libretto, it could be set in the context of French revolution, creating a superficial layer of the senses ofthe work; nevertheless, the
senses that can be found at its foundation
-
i.e., in the deep layer
-
stemmed directly from the sphere of traditional notions about
the world, typical for the sphere of influence of Christian ideas, values and world-view concepts.
Ths third part of the book treats of Bethoveen s
Fidelio.
In an attempt to answer the question: „What kind of libretto did
Beethoven seek? , possible influential
eontexîs
have been analysed, such as the situation of Viennese theatres, (he tradition of German
opera, ths impact ofthe concept of Weimar Classics, or the biographical context. One of the chapters contains a comparative study of
four versions
oí Fidelio
(that
із
a French version and three German versions) aiming at the observation of transformations occurring at
an aesthetic and formal level
аз
well as the level of ideas. Another important question was connected with determining to what extent
the musical layer ofthe opera strengthened the message and ideas contained in the libretto s subject matter.
The assumptions adopted for tha discourse, centring the process of analysis around textual contents ofthe only Beethoven s
opera, enabled scholars to demonstrate clearly the fact of a multi-storeyed direction of changes taking place in the culture of the
turn oitha l Jth century,
una
ако
a certain inadequacy of idealistic changes occurring in high culture and in (lie circles of popular
culture. Consequently, the picture ofthe turn ofthe 19lh century is demonstrated in a much more complex and heterogeneous
light, than it might cecm from the perspective of the written
worka
of the eminent thinkers of the
cru
of Enlightenment and the
Romantic breakthrough.
