Zusammenfassung: | "Emotion Talk Across Corpora offers new insights into how English speakers talk about their own and others' emotions. It is the first book-length treatment of 'emotion talk' in four registers of British English - conversation, news reportage, fiction and academic discourse - to combine research in two well-known linguistic approaches: appraisal theory and corpus linguistics. Using a 20-million-word subset from the British National Corpus, it combines small- and large-scale corpus studies of emotion terms and their patterns with an analysis of texts according to a modified version of appraisal theory. The book is a major contribution to the study of language and emotion, drawing on findings from cognitive linguistics, psychology and (linguistic) appraisal theory to model and interpret emotion talk, and will appeal to all researchers interested in the use of emotion talk in naturally occurring discourse."--BOOK JACKET. |
