SUMMARY
At the end of November
2006
the National Library, with the technical
and organizational support of TNS
OBOP,
completed the seventh re¬
search project from the cycle devoted to the social scope of the book in
Poland. The survey was based on a representative, random sample of
people over the age of
15
years from all over Poland. In particular we
looked to discern: which section of the Polish population reads and buys
books; the intensity of people s reading; the purchases made over the course
of the year; what kinds of books are most often read and purchased; and the
sources of access to books. We also looked at access to and use of the
Internet, as well as online reading trends.
Reading of Books in
2006
For
2006 50%
of Polish society declared that they read books (i.e. con¬
tacted in the course of the year with at least one publication). Women
were more frequent readers
(53%),
the inhabitants of cities
(55%),
people
with at least secondary lever education (including: secondary and vocatio¬
nal levels
- 61%,
third level
- 77%)
as well as young people under thirty:
15-19-year olds
(81%)
and 20-29-year olds
(56%).
The majority of men
(54%),
people living in the country
(60%),
being at least
30
years old
(58%),
with basic vocational education
(68%)
displayed no interest in
books. In one age group, of
50—59
year olds, a
50%
trend of reading books
was observed, which was identical to the all-Polish average.
Those who did not read any books (NB:
50%)
constituted the largest
part of Polish society. Those who read at most
6
books over the course of
the year accounted for one third of those polled
(32%).
Frequent readers
(at least
7
books annually) were in the minority
-
just slightly over
17%.
170
Fiction literature was among the reading material of
73%
of Polish
readers, however a large number of readers constituting
41%,
read also or
exclusively non-fiction publications.
Thrillers/suspense books enjoyed the greatest popularity
(20%
of readers)
as well as required school canon literary texts and textbooks (also
20%).
15%
read social/feature-romance novels, with encyclopedic books and
guides at
14%,
and specialist publications slightly lower at
12%.
Non-
-fiction, incorporating memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, reportage and
books relating to current events
-
to include sensationalist works, proved
popular with a figure of
11%.
Children s literature also did well at
10%.
Fantasy was read amongst
8%
of the readers, with religious books also
totaling
8%.
Collected essays together with journalism only accounted for
3%,
whereas esoteric publishing, incorporating UFO-logy, prophecies and
horoscopes only enjoyed a readership of
1%.
On the scale of the Polish
population as a whole, thrillers/suspense books and required school canon
readings and textbooks achieved the greatest popularity at
10%.
Two out of the four basic sources, in terms of access to books, had the
greatest significance for readers: libraries frequented by
40%
of readers
(including
26%
from public libraries), and individual purchases (also 40%r
most often in bookshops:
21%).
Every third reader
(33%)
found books
from amongst the collections of family or friends, or from their own book
collections (also
33%).
Comparing readership in Poland in
2006
with that noted at the end of the
20th century (in
2000),
it is possible to discern a shrinking trend in the social
circulation of the book and the general fall in the intensity of reading, both
on an all-Polish scale, and also amongst various groups of the population.
The Purchasing of Books in
2006
For
2006 33%
of Polish inhabitants of
15
years and older declared that
they d purchased books (at least one publication, including a school textbook).
Every fifth person polled
(20%)
bought between
1
and
4
titles, every tenth
person
(10%)
between
5
and
11
books. Only
3%
bought
12
or more books.
An interest in books ranged across various population groups: in some
groups the interest was smaller than the all-Polish average; in others it
exceeded it.
Persons to have bought books most rarely were those with primary
education
(15%),
people with a vocational education
(21%),
those
60
years
old and more
(20%),
and country dwellers
(22%).
Persons to have bought
books most often were those with a higher education, also on the level of
171
a Bachelor s degree
(57%),
with secondary and post-secondary education
(43%),
and city dwellers
(39%)·
Those with a comfortable financial income
were more inclined to buy books
(43%),
rather than people of low income
(17%).
Moreover, women bought books more often
(36%)
than men
(30%).
In terms of book purchases worth mentioning are readers
(55%)
and
Internet users
(49%).
The largest group of buyers
(40%)
bought only non-fiction books, fewer
buyers
(27%)
selected only fiction literature
-
even less
(24%)
bought both
kinds of publications. The largest group of buyers
(29%)
selected encyclo¬
pedias or handbooks. The following five kinds also proved popular: school
books (including obligatory titles from school curriculum) and professional
literature
-15%
of buyers, books for children and young people
- 14%
of
buyers, romantic novels and suspense books
-14%
of buyers. Almost every
tenth buyer
(9%)
bought religious books, and slightly fewer respondees
(8%)
reached for non-fiction books. The broad genre of fiction, including science-
-fiction, fantasy, thrillers, horror stories was selected by
5%
of buyers,
whereas journalistic and selected essays were chosen by
3%
of buyers. Only
few buyers
(2%)
chose esoteric and UFO-related publications: prophecies,
horoscopes, dream guides, etc.
In
2006
bookshops were the main places for the purchase of books
(indicated by
65%
of purchasers), followed by book clubs such as
Świat
Książki
[The World of Books},
Klub dla Ciebie
[The Club for You],
Klub
Książki Księgarni Krajowej
[The Book Club of
National
Bookshop] or
Prodoks
(17%),
as well as the
Internet,
with online bookshops such as
Merlin
(10%).
Remaining sources proved less popular:
7%
of purchasers
bought books from distribution kiosks,
5%
from second hand book shops
and supermarkets,
4%
from places offering the so-called cheap books,
whereas
3%
bought books from market stalls and stands (also to be found
at fairs and markets). Occasionally (for
1%
of purchasers) books were bought
also at libraries, schools, and church institutions, or from sales reps.
Compared with
2000
the purchase of books fell by
8
percentage points.
This trend was particularly worrying for the fact that the fall was also
noted amongst those who traditionally purchased large numbers of books:
those with a university education and the dwellers of big cities. Yet the
stand-out purchasers of books in
2006,
as in previous years, continued to
be those who are better educated, wealthier and more active in terms of
reading and their use of the Internet, which entails being more open to
traditional and new mass media.
As market participants they constituted a group characterized by fairly
stable, and predictable purchase patterns. Generally speaking, decisions
172
concerning the purchase of books had all the features of situational beha¬
viors, dependent on numerous various impulses, which are relatively easy
to predict and take into consideration when planning publishing lists (i.e.
the influence of a film adaptation on the purchase of the book), as well as
the less obvious ones
-
a combination of cultural, political and current
affairs, or even social trends and attitudes.
Internet usage and Internet reading
In the presented research relating to the use of the Internet, in contrast to
general research on this medium, we focused mainly on reading and books,
and therefore looked at such issues as: the use of e-books and/or online news¬
papers; the search for books on the Internet; looking for information about
books online; using digital libraries; or downloading books from the Net.
This research was deemed essential, particularly in the light of the IKiCz
research carried out in
2002,
which demonstrated that, contrary to popular
belief, Internet users have an above-average interest in traditional books.
Our research also confirmed this: in
2006 69%
of Internet users answered
affirmatively to the question about reading traditional books, whereas only
37%
of non-Internet users answered affirmatively to the question.
In Poland Internet users still constitute a minority. Our research shows
that
41 %
of respondents have access to the Internet, although
5 %
of those
with access to the Internet said that they do not use it. In
2006 36%
of the
Polish population above the age of
15
used the Internet: most often at home
(28%),
as well as in work
(10%),
and more rarely at school or in college
(6%).
The largest group of Internet users are those with a third level educa¬
tion
(65%),
and also well represented were those with a secondary level
education
(45%).
The smallest percentage from amongst the respondents
were those with a primary
(25%)
and vocational
(15%)
education.
Internet users dominated in the age groups of
15—19
year olds
(70%)
and
20-29
year olds
(57%),
whilst in the group of
50-59
year olds this figure
totaled
20%;
whereas amongst those who were
60
and over only
3%
used
the Internet. In
2006 45%
of people living in Polish cities used the Internet,
with that number reaching
21%
for those living in the countryside.
Research carried out by IKiCz represented the first attempt at establishing
Internet usage from the perspective of reading. In the questionnaire form In¬
ternet users were asked what they read online in terms of the various kinds of
reading, to include news from Internet portals, websites, discussion forums
and blogs. Those polled were also asked about their reading of newspapers and
e-books, which is a form of reading that is becoming increasingly popular.
173
One should note that almost one fifth of Internet users stated that they
mainly use the Internet for the downloading of music, films, programs,
games etc. However the majority of respondents stated that they use the
Internet for
е
-reading purposes.
In
2006
news and information provided by Internet portals enjoy the
greatest popularity
— 67%
of Internet users
(24%
of the those polled). In
second place were websites of all kinds
- 59%
of Internet users
(21%
of
those polled).
27%
of Internet users
(10%
of those polled) stated that they
read online newspapers (mainly Internet versions of traditional newspapers
or magazines).
19%
of Polish Internet users
(7%
of those polled) read ma¬
terial from Internet fomms and discussion groups.
In
2006
one fifth of Internet users read online books
-
not only literary
works, but also professional manuals, scientific books,
DIY
books, and books
of special interest, which have been made available online in different formats,
and half of those declared that they read such books several times a year. Half
of the respondents reading books online
(10%
of all Internet users) declared
that they had used different kinds of digital libraries (virtual, electronic), and
the rest indicated different sources:
portak,
services or web pages.
More and more often, the Internet represents a source
ofinformation
about the traditional book. For
2006 27%
of Internet users declared that
they d searched for information on the Internet about recent events, opi¬
nion, reviews, fragments, and recommendations or book prices
— 11%
of
which stated that they do this frequently.
The final interesting issue concerned the downloading of files from the
Internet. As it turned out, only a relatively small group of Internet users
makes use of this possibility in Poland
(38%).
In
2006
mostly music and
film files were downloaded, whereas only
12%
of Internet users down¬
loaded text documents, articles and the like from the Internet, whereas an
even smaller number of Internet users
(5%)
downloaded e-books.
This research indicates that the Internet serves not only as a source for
the purchasing of traditional books, but also as a source of books in electro¬
nic version. We may also state that blogs and discussion forums have also
proved popular. However books are still the main source of reading, whe¬
reas the Internet, rather than being a competitor, represents a complement
to the activities of the book industry. People refer to Internet portals for
various kinds
ofinformation.
Having said this however, overwhelming num¬
bers of people still prefer the traditional forms of books and newspapers.
What is more, the numbers of people reading books still remain higher
than the number of Internet users; but also amongst Internet users more
are choosing to read traditional books and newspapers over the news bulle¬
tins of web portals and web pages.

SUMMARY
At the end of November
2006
the National Library, with the technical
and organizational support of TNS
OBOP,
completed the seventh re¬
search project from the cycle devoted to the social scope of the book in
Poland. The survey was based on a representative, random sample of
people over the age of
15
years from all over Poland. In particular we
looked to discern: which section of the Polish population reads and buys
books; the intensity of people's reading; the purchases made over the course
of the year; what kinds of books are most often read and purchased; and the
sources of access to books. We also looked at access to and use of the
Internet, as well as online reading trends.
Reading of Books in
2006
For
2006 50%
of Polish society declared that they read books (i.e. con¬
tacted in the course of the year with at least one publication). Women
were more frequent readers
(53%),
the inhabitants of cities
(55%),
people
with at least secondary lever education (including: secondary and vocatio¬
nal levels
- 61%,
third level
- 77%)
as well as young people under thirty:
15-19-year olds
(81%)
and 20-29-year olds
(56%).
The majority of men
(54%),
people living in the country
(60%),
being at least
30
years old
(58%),
with basic vocational education
(68%)
displayed no interest in
books. In one age group, of
50—59
year olds, a
50%
trend of reading books
was observed, which was identical to the all-Polish average.
Those who did not read any books (NB:
50%)
constituted the largest
part of Polish society. Those who read at most
6
books over the course of
the year accounted for one third of those polled
(32%).
Frequent readers
(at least
7
books annually) were in the minority
-
just slightly over
17%.
170
Fiction literature was among the reading material of
73%
of Polish
readers, however a large number of readers constituting
41%,
read also or
exclusively non-fiction publications.
Thrillers/suspense books enjoyed the greatest popularity
(20%
of readers)
as well as required school canon literary texts and textbooks (also
20%).
15%
read social/feature-romance novels, with encyclopedic books and
guides at
14%,
and specialist publications slightly lower at
12%.
Non-
-fiction, incorporating memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, reportage and
books relating to current events
-
to include sensationalist works, proved
popular with a figure of
11%.
Children's literature also did well at
10%.
Fantasy was read amongst
8%
of the readers, with religious books also
totaling
8%.
Collected essays together with journalism only accounted for
3%,
whereas esoteric publishing, incorporating UFO-logy, prophecies and
horoscopes only enjoyed a readership of
1%.
On the scale of the Polish
population as a whole, thrillers/suspense books and required school canon
readings and textbooks achieved the greatest popularity at
10%.
Two out of the four basic sources, in terms of access to books, had the
greatest significance for readers: libraries frequented by
40%
of readers
(including
26%
from public libraries), and individual purchases (also 40%r
most often in bookshops:
21%).
Every third reader
(33%)
found books
from amongst the collections of family or friends, or from their own book
collections (also
33%).
Comparing readership in Poland in
2006
with that noted at the end of the
20th century (in
2000),
it is possible to discern a shrinking trend in the social
circulation of the book and the general fall in the intensity of reading, both
on an all-Polish scale, and also amongst various groups of the population.
The Purchasing of Books in
2006
For
2006 33%
of Polish inhabitants of
15
years and older declared that
they'd purchased books (at least one publication, including a school textbook).
Every fifth person polled
(20%)
bought between
1
and
4
titles, every tenth
person
(10%)
between
5
and
11
books. Only
3%
bought
12
or more books.
An interest in books ranged across various population groups: in some
groups the interest was smaller than the all-Polish average; in others it
exceeded it.
Persons to have bought books most rarely were those with primary
education
(15%),
people with a vocational education
(21%),
those
60
years
old and more
(20%),
and country dwellers
(22%).
Persons to have bought
books most often were those with a higher education, also on the level of
171
a Bachelor's degree
(57%),
with secondary and post-secondary education
(43%),
and city dwellers
(39%)·
Those with a comfortable financial income
were more inclined to buy books
(43%),
rather than people of low income
(17%).
Moreover, women bought books more often
(36%)
than men
(30%).
In terms of book purchases worth mentioning are readers
(55%)
and
Internet users
(49%).
The largest group of buyers
(40%)
bought only non-fiction books, fewer
buyers
(27%)
selected only fiction literature
-
even less
(24%)
bought both
kinds of publications. The largest group of buyers
(29%)
selected encyclo¬
pedias or handbooks. The following five kinds also proved popular: school
books (including obligatory titles from school curriculum) and professional
literature
-15%
of buyers, books for children and young people
- 14%
of
buyers, romantic novels and suspense books
-14%
of buyers. Almost every
tenth buyer
(9%)
bought religious books, and slightly fewer respondees
(8%)
reached for non-fiction books. The broad genre of fiction, including science-
-fiction, fantasy, thrillers, horror stories was selected by
5%
of buyers,
whereas journalistic and selected essays were chosen by
3%
of buyers. Only
few buyers
(2%)
chose esoteric and UFO-related publications: prophecies,
horoscopes, dream guides, etc.
In
2006
bookshops were the main places for the purchase of books
(indicated by
65%
of purchasers), followed by book clubs such as
Świat
Książki
[The World of Books},
Klub dla Ciebie
[The Club for You],
Klub
Książki Księgarni Krajowej
[The Book Club of
National
Bookshop] or
Prodoks
(17%),
as well as the
Internet,
with online bookshops such as
Merlin
(10%).
Remaining sources proved less popular:
7%
of purchasers
bought books from distribution kiosks,
5%
from second hand book shops
and supermarkets,
4%
from places offering the so-called cheap books,
whereas
3%
bought books from market stalls and stands (also to be found
at fairs and markets). Occasionally (for
1%
of purchasers) books were bought
also at libraries, schools, and church institutions, or from sales reps.
Compared with
2000
the purchase of books fell by
8
percentage points.
This trend was particularly worrying for the fact that the fall was also
noted amongst those who traditionally purchased large numbers of books:
those with a university education and the dwellers of big cities. Yet the
stand-out purchasers of books in
2006,
as in previous years, continued to
be those who are better educated, wealthier and more active in terms of
reading and their use of the Internet, which entails being more open to
traditional and new mass media.
As market participants they constituted a group characterized by fairly
stable, and predictable purchase patterns. Generally speaking, decisions
172
concerning the purchase of books had all the features of situational beha¬
viors, dependent on numerous various impulses, which are relatively easy
to predict and take into consideration when planning publishing lists (i.e.
the influence of a film adaptation on the purchase of the book), as well as
the less obvious ones
-
a combination of cultural, political and current
affairs, or even social trends and attitudes.
Internet usage and Internet reading
In the presented research relating to the use of the Internet, in contrast to
general research on this medium, we focused mainly on reading and books,
and therefore looked at such issues as: the use of e-books and/or online news¬
papers; the search for books on the Internet; looking for information about
books online; using digital libraries; or downloading books from the Net.
This research was deemed essential, particularly in the light of the IKiCz
research carried out in
2002,
which demonstrated that, contrary to popular
belief, Internet users have an above-average interest in traditional books.
Our research also confirmed this: in
2006 69%
of Internet users answered
affirmatively to the question about reading traditional books, whereas only
37%
of non-Internet users answered affirmatively to the question.
In Poland Internet users still constitute a minority. Our research shows
that
41 %
of respondents have access to the Internet, although
5 %
of those
with access to the Internet said that they do not use it. In
2006 36%
of the
Polish population above the age of
15
used the Internet: most often at home
(28%),
as well as in work
(10%),
and more rarely at school or in college
(6%).
The largest group of Internet users are those with a third level educa¬
tion
(65%),
and also well represented were those with a secondary level
education
(45%).
The smallest percentage from amongst the respondents
were those with a primary
(25%)
and vocational
(15%)
education.
Internet users dominated in the age groups of
15—19
year olds
(70%)
and
20-29
year olds
(57%),
whilst in the group of
50-59
year olds this figure
totaled
20%;
whereas amongst those who were
60
and over only
3%
used
the Internet. In
2006 45%
of people living in Polish cities used the Internet,
with that number reaching
21%
for those living in the countryside.
Research carried out by IKiCz represented the first attempt at establishing
Internet usage from the perspective of reading. In the questionnaire form In¬
ternet users were asked what they read online in terms of the various kinds of
reading, to include news from Internet portals, websites, discussion forums
and blogs. Those polled were also asked about their reading of newspapers and
e-books, which is a form of reading that is becoming increasingly popular.
173
One should note that almost one fifth of Internet users stated that they
mainly use the Internet for the downloading of music, films, programs,
games etc. However the majority of respondents stated that they use the
Internet for
е
-reading purposes.
In
2006
news and information provided by Internet portals enjoy the
greatest popularity
— 67%
of Internet users
(24%
of the those polled). In
second place were websites of all kinds
- 59%
of Internet users
(21%
of
those polled).
27%
of Internet users
(10%
of those polled) stated that they
read online newspapers (mainly Internet versions of traditional newspapers
or magazines).
19%
of Polish Internet users
(7%
of those polled) read ma¬
terial from Internet fomms and discussion groups.
In
2006
one fifth of Internet users read online books
-
not only literary
works, but also professional manuals, scientific books,
DIY
books, and books
of special interest, which have been made available online in different formats,
and half of those declared that they read such books several times a year. Half
of the respondents reading books online
(10%
of all Internet users) declared
that they had used different kinds of digital libraries (virtual, electronic), and
the rest indicated different sources:
portak,
services or web pages.
More and more often, the Internet represents a source
ofinformation
about the traditional book. For
2006 27%
of Internet users declared that
they'd searched for information on the Internet about recent events, opi¬
nion, reviews, fragments, and recommendations or book prices
— 11%
of
which stated that they do this frequently.
