The Perspective of a Pianist
The dissertation is a description of three chamber works by Robert Schumann:
Piano Quintet in
E
flat major Op.
44,
Sonata in A minor Op.
105
for piano and vio¬
lin and Sonata in
D
minor Op.
121
for piano and violin, all of which can be found on
the CD recording. The chosen works present Schumann s mature (Quintet) and late
(sonatas) creative periods, at the same time they constitute frames of the composer s
activity in the field of chamber music. The dissertation, written from a pianist s
perspective, shows how numerous factors influenced the conscious development of
artistic vision during the preparation and performance of those works. Subsequent
chapters are devoted to the issues that constitute the interpretation of the given
works. Particular emphasis was put on the problem of piano dialogue with string
instruments, the role of the piano in the creation of expressiveness and sound was
discussed as well.
The first chapter outlines the figure of Robert Schumann in the context of
his epoch and its main aesthetic and philosophical tenets. Transformations in the
music of the Romantic period led to the achievement of the deepest expressiveness,
individuality and originality of artistic expression as well as to the development of
new forms. The composer s biography was presented in the light of typical Roman¬
ticist behaviours. The most important events in Robert Schumann s life are con¬
nected with the following Romanticist attitudes: evasive, Tyrtaean and ironic.
The second chapter contains a thorough description of presented works,
context for their creation, formal analysis and evolution of Schumann s musical
language. The third chapter is devoted to the sphere of musical meanings and the
role they played in the development of a conscious interpretation. The author, a per¬
former and teacher of long standing, analyses the language of meanings characteristic for
Schumann. Quotations, polyphonic structures, integration of the cycle,
soggetto
cavato,
harmony or humour are the elements of the discussed works that determined
the character of the performance.
In the fourth chapter, a study of
pianistic
performance problems was presented. The
author provides numerous examples concerning the issue. Two elements constitute
the leitmotif of the dissertation: the act of inspiring and combining opposites. They
are to ensure the equilibrium between strings and piano without limiting the expres¬
sive freedom of each of the instruments.
