Kielce
in the mid-19th century was a small town both in respect of area and the
number of residents. The inhabitants earned their living from crafts, trade, and
agriculture. A considerable group of people was employed in state, church, and
private administration as well as in education. The inhabitants, particularly young
people, were vividly interested in the political developments in Poland after the defeat
of the Crimean War by the csar. The population of
Kielce
took an active part in the
wave of manifestations and demonstrations in the years
1860-1862.
The national
organisation was built not only in the town itself, but it was extended to the whole
area of Cracow Voivodeship.
The outbreak of the Rising did not fulfil the ambitions of local activists who were
thinking of taking the town from the Russian hands and creating there a strong
insurgent base. The Russians took advantage of the inertia of the Poles and
created an important strategic point in
Kielce,
which was very effective in fighting
Polish insurgent troops in the area of
Radom
Guberniya. The Russian military units
under the command of colonel Tchengiery that stationed in
Kielce
were sent aga¬
inst the insurgents detachments of Langiewicz, Jeziorariski,
Chmieleński,
Hauke
Bosak,
and many others.
From the start of the warfare the population of the town was subjected to ter¬
ror, but in spite of it, the inhabitants of
Kielce
helped significantly the Polish insur¬
gents as far as military espionage is concerned and offered assistance to people
caught in battlefields and detained in the prison in
Zamkowa
Street.
Several hundred residents fled from the town in order to take an active part in
the warfare. About
15
men were distinguished in battlefield. A major part of the clergy
supported the struggle for national liberation. When the warfare ceased, repressions
included both those who fought with arms in hand and those who supported that
fight, including the Church. Generally, it is possible to say that the residents of
Kielce
fulfilled well their obligations for the national cause in the years
1860-1865.
