The School of Peter
Abelard
Paperback Re-issue
Peter Abelard conducted many analyses of Scriptural and Patristic
teaching, and achieved an extensive rapprochement between Chris¬
tian and pagan thought. His public career was ended in
1140
by
an ecclesiastical condemnation, but this touched upon the central
issues facing the early leaders of the medieval scholastic move¬
ment and Abelard s own teachings continued to be controversial.
Dr Luscombe
considers the influence of Abelard s principal
teachings among his contemporaries and successors. His aim is to
explain the conflicting estimates of Abelard which were current
in the twelfth century and later, and to provide a full account of
the writings and varied fortunes of Abelard s disciples. He also
examines the manuscript tradition of Abelard s work and that of
his followers.
The condemnation of
1140
repudiated Abelard s leading doc¬
trines. In the face of this reverse Abelard s disciples partly retreated
from the position of their master, but some of them sought to
adapt and to extend his teachings. In the school of Hugh of St
Victor a
thorough rethinking of Abelard s ideas was in progress.
Dr
Luscombe discusses the leading writers of the twelfth century
who followed this initiative: Roland (Pope Alexander III),
Gratian of Bologna, Peter Lombard, Robert of Melun and
Richard of St Victor.
This detailed analysis of the transmission and development of
Abelard s ideas enables
Dr
Luscombe to explain why, in spite of
his exaggerations and errors, Abelard was such an influential
figure in the early scholastic movement.
