Canada s First
Nations
A History of Founding Peoples from Earliest Times
Fourth Edition Olive Patricia
Dickason
with David T. McNab
Canada s First
Nouons
draws on multiple disciplines to supplement a historical record
that, until recently, Aboriginal people themselves had no hand in writing. Updated
throughout by David T. McNab, who has also contributed a new final chapter, this
fourth edition brings Olive Dickason s award-winning text well into the twenty-first
century. Among the recent issues and events discussed are
•
the impact of climate change in the Arctic;
•
the Tsawwassen land-claim agreement in British Columbia;
•
the Ipperwash inquiry and Caledonia land dispute in Ontario; and
•
the apology to residential-school survivors delivered by Prime Minister Stephen
Harper in
2008.
Designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the subject, Canada s First Nations
is suitable for courses in Aboriginal/Native studies and history at a variety of levels. It is
an invaluable reference resource for anyone concerned with Aboriginal issues.
Features
■
Interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from archaeology, anthropology,
biology, sociology, and political science, adds depth as well as breadth.
■
Discussions of recent developments in areas such as land claims and
self-government reinforce the relevance of the past to the present.
■
New material includes the most recent statistics available, from the
2006
census.
■
Generous illustrations now include
20
additional photographs, along with a
new map of historical sites related to Aboriginal history.
