I: The rise of resistance movements
The consolidation of colonial conquests in the interwar years, from the aftermath of the First World
War to the Italian occupation of Abyssinia, the last remaining independent country in Africa apart
from Liberia. The suppression of mass insurrections in existing colonial territories, including the
controversial use of aerial policing, and the rise of independence movements. The deployment of
large regular armies, supported by aircraft, armoured cars and, to a lesser extent, tanks, to
