Everybody knows how the war
was conducted but few know how and why it came about. Commonly known stereotypes,
which have been repeated since
1939,
although some of them were created even earlier, are
based on untrue facts. This short period of history, including the two first years of the So¬
viet occupation of the eastern half of the Republic of Poland is the most hypocritically de¬
scribed part of the 20th century s history today. Particularly those who should best know the
events preceding their nations biggest tragedy in their one thousand-year history
-
the Poles
and the Germans -have a completely misguided notion of them. Circumstances related to
five groups of issues are presented contrary to the facts:
Firstly: The overall view of relations between
Piłsudski
and Hitler. The Chief of
State s instruction, or his last will, on the international policy is passed over in silence or mi¬
sinterpreted.
Secondly: Certain political preferences of the Soviet Union are not mentioned in
ana-lyses of events that led to the war. The Soviet Union s actual role is revealed only from
signing the treaty called the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, while many years of Moscow s ef¬
forts to sign the treaty are ignored and the document is treated as if it was related only to
events of
1939.
Thirdly: England s guarantees are interpreted in a way that corresponds to the post¬
war polarity, and not according to the concept pursued by Prime Minister Chamberlain. The
guaran-tees were negotiated in different conditions and served a different purpose from the
one proc-laimed in the modern political doctrine.
Fourthly: The true motives

which had nothing in common with both Polish and Euro¬
pean interests

are overlooked.
Fifthly: An essential fact is not taken into consideration which conducts towards
the war, i. e. pressures exerted by the American establishment, being in conflict with Lon¬
don and Paris politics, on the Warsaw stiffness against Berlin
s
requirements.
Issues listed in points three and four have been unknown so far to both Polish and
inter-national historiography. Issues raised in points one, two and five (and the analysis of
the Riga negotiations) can be considered to some extent as authorial studies.
The basic materials for the publication were collected by a historian. He decided not
to continue his work because of the issues raised in the „Introduction . In result, the paper
was finished and commented by an agricultural engineer, former violinist.
