The members of the 6th Interdisciplinary Historical Conference Ad fontes (Jamrozowa Polana, 4-7 May 2005) were asked to reflect on the view of the man seen from their perspective: does any of them occupy a more prominent position in historical research than the others, do they open new horizons for contemporary humanities - so focused on anthropological studies - in dis¬ covering the past, is the man from the past , perceived at the meeting point of these realities, not doomed to remain within the circle of petrified views? The selection of the subject matter - and here we embark on the second main scope of the debate - was dictated by the desire to consider the issue of the so-called interdisciplinary char¬ acter of historical research. What does the notion signify in the everyday reality of the research? How are the researchers indebted to the achievements and methodology of other disciplines of sci¬ ence? Is the interdisciplinary character advocated for so long at all possible? If so, to what extent? Would it not be better to speak of the integration of disciplines? The issues represented by these questions were held together with a very comprehensive for¬ mula Mundus hominis - civilisation, culture, nature. On the interdisciplinary character of his¬ torical research, with the hope for a diversified discussion. We were not disappointed, which is con¬ firmed by the diversity of the issues discussed and the possibility to become acquainted with a wide range of various research methodologies presented in this volume. The collection opens with the reflection on the theory of studies of culture and civilisation, distinctly emphasising the anthropo¬ logical aspect, which is followed by a long series of articles illustrating the practice of the research. The title of the second scope of issues includes entanglement in culture , as the collected texts emphasise the existential situation of the man and his functioning in the sphere of notions, stereo¬ types, mechanisms defining the principles of life in the community and the functioning of collec¬ tive memory. This subject matter is linked with the third thematic group, resulting from the research of how people from the past formed images of aliens and surrounding phenomena of community life with the use of cultural interpretation. Another thematic block combines the question of cognitive value of model antinomy of nature and culture, deeply rooted in the tradition of contemporary science. The reflection analysed the 566 Summary presence of the model in the narrative view of the world, which links it with the preceding sec¬ tion, and the attitude of the man from the past to nature. On the one hand it presents his struggle with nature, an effort at taming it, on the other, the discovery of its beauty, secrets and the expe¬ rience of failing to know it completely. The fifth group of articles includes the studies of various areas of history and their comparison draws attention to the diversity of sources in researching the culture in the past, which is the implementation of the basic assumption of the conferences cycle - ad fontes! The volume is concluded with the most extensive group of articles, in which the conference members adopted their position concerning the understanding and need of interdisciplinary char¬ acter of the research of the past. They also ventured to evaluate the effects of such an effort in archaeology and history. The articles collected in this part include both theoretical reflection and analytical inquiry. The sequence of the texts results both from the chronology of the presented his¬ torical phenomena and the arrangement of accents or proportions between theory and practice. It should be emphasises that during the meetings Ad fontes we aspire to exchange the views concerning the research of the past with the emphasis on methodological reflection useful for their conduct. Therefore, the proceedings do not yield to easy and unquestionable systématisation, which takes into consideration the conference s message and documents as far as it is possible which issues were discussed and what direction the debate followed. The published material, however, constitutes only part of the deliberations, as the discussion, most creative and dynamic in the view of many of its participants, almost completely yielded to the maxim: verba volant. Its only distinct trace are the Opening remarks by Wojciech Iwańczak and the voice of Marek Cetwiński (Equus maculis...) both supplementary to and polemical with the paper of Piotr Boron published to present the spirit of the debate, which was not always at all peaceful. Presenting the reader with this volume, we hope it will become an inspiration to consid¬ er and discuss the practice of historical studies, their condition - primarily in Poland - and, last but not least, their place in two, not always convergent worlds: science and modem culture. The members of the 6th Interdisciplinary Historical Conference Ad fontes (Jamrozowa Polana, 4-7 May 2005) were asked to reflect on the view of the man seen from their perspective: does any of them occupy a more prominent position in historical research than the others, do they open new horizons for contemporary humanities - so focused on anthropological studies - in dis¬ covering the past, is the "man from the past", perceived at the meeting point of these realities, not doomed to remain within the circle of petrified views? The selection of the subject matter - and here we embark on the second main scope of the debate - was dictated by the desire to consider the issue of the so-called "interdisciplinary char¬ acter" of historical research. What does the notion signify in the everyday reality of the research? How are the researchers indebted to the achievements and methodology of other disciplines of sci¬ ence? Is the "interdisciplinary character" advocated for so long at all possible? If so, to what extent? Would it not be better to speak of the integration of disciplines? The issues represented by these questions were held together with a very comprehensive for¬ mula "Mundus hominis" - civilisation, culture, nature. On the interdisciplinary character of his¬ torical research, with the hope for a diversified discussion. We were not disappointed, which is con¬ firmed by the diversity of the issues discussed and the possibility to become acquainted with a wide range of various research methodologies presented in this volume. The collection opens with the reflection on the theory of studies of culture and civilisation, distinctly emphasising the anthropo¬ logical aspect, which is followed by a long series of articles illustrating the practice of the research. The title of the second scope of issues includes "entanglement in culture", as the collected texts emphasise the existential situation of the man and his functioning in the sphere of notions, stereo¬ types, mechanisms defining the principles of life in the community and the functioning of collec¬ tive memory. This subject matter is linked with the third thematic group, resulting from the research of how people from the past formed images of aliens and surrounding phenomena of community life with the use of cultural interpretation. Another thematic block combines the question of cognitive value of model antinomy of nature and culture, deeply rooted in the tradition of contemporary science. The reflection analysed the 566 Summary presence of the model in the narrative view of the world, which links it with the preceding sec¬ tion, and the attitude of the man from the past to nature. On the one hand it presents his struggle with nature, an effort at taming it, on the other, the discovery of its beauty, secrets and the expe¬ rience of failing to know it completely. The fifth group of articles includes the studies of various areas of history and their comparison draws attention to the diversity of sources in researching the culture in the past, which is the implementation of the basic assumption of the conferences cycle - ad fontes! The volume is concluded with the most extensive group of articles, in which the conference members adopted their position concerning the understanding and need of interdisciplinary char¬ acter of the research of the past. They also ventured to evaluate the effects of such an effort in archaeology and history. The articles collected in this part include both theoretical reflection and analytical inquiry. The sequence of the texts results both from the chronology of the presented his¬ torical phenomena and the arrangement of accents or proportions between theory and practice. It should be emphasises that during the meetings Ad fontes we aspire to exchange the views concerning the research of the past with the emphasis on methodological reflection useful for their conduct. Therefore, the proceedings do not yield to easy and unquestionable systématisation, which takes into consideration the conference's message and documents as far as it is possible which issues were discussed and what direction the debate followed. The published material, however, constitutes only part of the deliberations, as the discussion, most creative and dynamic in the view of many of its participants, almost completely yielded to the maxim: verba volant. Its only distinct trace are the Opening remarks by Wojciech Iwańczak and the voice of Marek Cetwiński (Equus maculis.) both supplementary to and polemical with the paper of Piotr Boron published to present the spirit of the debate, which was not always at all peaceful. Presenting the reader with this volume, we hope it will become an inspiration to consid¬ er and discuss the practice of historical studies, their condition - primarily in Poland - and, last but not least, their place in two, not always convergent worlds: science and modem culture.
