Brown
Bard of
Brìtishness
What does the future hold for Britain and the
relationships between England, Scotland and
Wales? Does Britain have a distinctive
meaning for the English, Scottish and Welsh
beyond their own national identities? Is it an
invented notion long past its sell-by-date or
does it offer the potential for a civic renewal
in the context of devolution? These are
questions that Gordon Brown, likely to be
Britain s next Prime Minister, has made his
own in recent years. In his polemical essay
Tom Nairn reminds us that Gordon Brown has
been struggling with these issues since he
edited The Red Paper on Scotland in
1975.
Tom Nairn predicts that the May
2007
elections for the Scottish Parliament and
National Assembly of Wales, which mark the
300*
anniversary of the Union of Scotland
with England, will also bring about the
nemesis of that Union. Other contributors to
this volume beg to disagree.
