Dutch settlement in
Łęczyca
region began at the end of
1780
and continued
until
1940.
It has left a rich cultural heritage that is partly preserved in form of
villages, cottages, residential and utility buildings, as well as churches and
graveyards. Documentation of objects that bear witness of Dutch heritage is
presented in this book.
The Dutch settlers emigrated from
Friesen
and Flanders to Poland in
XVI
century, since they have been persecuted at home for their religious believes.
Polish landowners offered them land adjacent to rivers, which has been flooded
every spring. The Dutch settlers have been familiar with such events and knew
where to locate buildings and how to labor the fields that are seasonally under
the water. They brought with them the know-how to cope with seasonal floods,
and knew how to harvest their crops and tend their animals despite such
adversities. They have inherited such skills from their ancestors who have lived
in the low-lands and learned to cut draining ditches, make causeways and
dams. The settlers have formed communes to erect their villages and increase
effectiveness of farms and ranches. Their ability to turn previously useless,
seasonally flooded river valleys into crop-yielding agricultural land, meadows to
graze cattle, or fruit bearing orchards, has been appreciated by the landowners.
Besides, the organization of the Dutch settlers commune was far more
advanced than that of the local serfs who have been forced to work for the
landowner. The Dutch immigrants have been free from drudgery, and paid
a mutually agreed lease to the landowner.
In contrast to the local serfs, the Dutch settlers have been subject to the
Dutch law, which was considered so attractive that has been applied to German
and even Polish settlers.
The layout of Dutch villages was distinctly different from the local ones.
Unfortunately, only a few buildings erected by Dutch settlers have been
preserved. One of the oldest is a Baptist church in
Dąbie,
built at the beginning
of XX century. Only five original buildings have still survived in five villages,
from ninety six towns and villages established by the Dutch settlers.
