PrO independence thought
Such political groups as Confederation of Independent Poland (KPN), Movement for the Recon¬
struction of Poland
(ROP)
that define themselves in their policy statements as right-wing and independ¬
ent parties, aspire to be the representatives of pro-independence thought. The idea of independence, no¬
tion of a state, Christian ethic, social teaching of Catholic church, tradition, democracy, idea of social
justice, idea of law and order and family were common denominators that enable us to carry out such
classification. The main motives of the independent thought were: conviction of continuation of a long
tradition of fight for independence with partitioners, invaders and their supporters and sense of fulfilling
especially important social-national mission whose final effect was strengthening of state sovereignty.
Creators of the political thought of KPN and
ROP
formulated political aims among which the
first position was granted to the construction of independent, democratic state with stable and socially
accepted law. Determining the desirable shape of Poland special attention was put to Christian values
which were to become the basis of moral revival of Polish state and society. Following this track, they
opted for
réintroduction
of the best patriotic national traditions. It was stressed that the idea of fighting
for the good name of Poland, historic truth and protection of Polish national identity and national tradi¬
tion were central ideas of Polish independent thought.

Catholic social teaching in political thought of chosen right-wing parties
Social teaching of Church is the basis of a doctrine of political Catholicism. Using moral values,
it passes judgement on the thought and social, economic and political practice. This study is an attempt
to show the position of political parties that have Catholic teaching in their programmes towards social
and political problems: how they have interpreted recommendations of social teaching of Church and
how they have introduced into social life principles that have been suggested by these teachings and how
they have understood the processes which Poland underwent after
1989.
Those parties stressed Catholicism, rightism and anticommunism. Values that they declared
were subordinated to two main categories: to the nation and Catholic religion. These values included:
freedom, independence, solidarity, helpfulness, faith, family, tradition, private property, common inter¬
est. Programmes of these parries included the idea of the state of Poland which carries out an order based
on Christian ethic and which takes national interest into consideration.

Conservative thought
The basic meaning of the term conservatism has been presented at the beginning of a lecture.
From philosophical point of view conservatism is an autonomous canon of constant and always topical
principles and values. In political science understanding it can be identified in two ways. Firstly, such
name is applied to the political doctrine shaped under the influence of rapid changes caused by the

secondly, in this way there is determined a relation to existing reality and
method of changes in functioning and structures of public, political, economic and social life. In the in¬
troductory part, it has also been shown, preferred by conservatives, political values, their attitude to the
Polish Peoples Republic and structural origin of conservative movement in Poland after
1989.
In con¬
temporary Polish conservative movement, researchers separated two trends that accepted republican
form of government and one affirming
monarchiái
form that is adjusted, in its outside manifestation, to
the present time. In this study these two conservative options that prefer democracy have been pre¬
sented. Conservatives conceptions concerning vision of society, legal-political shape of state, economy
and foreign police have been discussed in the next part of this study.
Tomasz Koziełlo
Conservative-national thought
Conservative-national thought is based on a few basic values. They are: belief in God, obeying
His Commandments, restoration of Christian monarchy, respect and care of development of nation,
obeying human rights which result from God s law, duty of serving to God, homeland and fellow men, re¬
spect and obedience to authority that conducts its duty on the basis of the above mentioned rules. The
realization of these values should be the base for creating the most desirable political system. The con¬
cepts of political systems assume the introduction of authoritarian monarchy and limitation of democ¬
racy. This is connected with deprivation of political rights of some part of society, establishment of social
hierarchy based on birth, wealth, education status and services and introduction of elite rule
-
persons
who are morally and intellectually prepared to rule a country for the good of society. Economical con¬
cepts assume protection and respect of private property, free market, free economic activity and the least
state interference into economic and social matters. Concepts of foreign policy tend to guarantee Poland
an important place in international circles and its security and to protect Polish interests in international
organizations.
Ewa Maj
National and nationalistic thought
National and nationalistic thought in contemporary Poland referred to ideological output of Na¬
tional Democracy and National-Radical Camp. Nation was the main value. National elite was the es¬
sence of Polish national identity. It consisted of Poles with high sense of ties with tradition, Catholicism
and national character.
Their ideal was national state. Its institutions protected the nation s rights
-
that was a sovereign
of state power. They induced national activity and taught civic responsibility. Nationalists criticized the
direction of legal-political changes in Poland during political transformation. They stated that deprecia¬
tion of the state and of national leadership happened at that time.
Economy should be based on national values, private property and free competition but Polish
economic subjects should be preferred. Keeping material property in Polish hands was the condition of its
privatization and reprivatization.
Polish national and nationalistic thought rejected model of integration of the continent on the
basis suggested by the European Union. It suggested an alternative vision of Europe; Europe of Independ¬
ent National States, Europe of Spirit, National-Radical Europe or Slavic Europe.
Accomplishment of this political thought was to be done by widening political influences and
fight for places in parliament and in local government s institutions. Political extremists planned to
arouse national revolution as a result of which they would form Great Poland of Polish Nation.

A vision of state in political thought of Centre Agreement
(1990-1997)
Christian values were to be the foundation of democracy in Poland according to Centre Agree¬
ment. At the same time it opted for effective market economy, rejecting indirect solutions and the third
way between socialism and capitalism. Modern Polish economy should be based on private property,
freedom of private initiative, equality of chances, partner labour relationships and capital.
Parliamentary democracy with tripartite division of power, with respecting citizens freedom and
with local government was the basic value for Centre Agreement in political sphere.
The main aim of foreign policy was to guarantee the state military, economic and ecological
safety. The exterior safety is conditioned by: economic potential, the presence of American army in Eu¬
rope and membership of Poland in NATO and European Union.

Contemporary political thought of the peasant movement
Contemporary political thought of the peasant movement is most explicitly expressed by
programme conceptions of Polish Peasants Party, the only party that has been active under the same
name since
2000.
Its origins are the 112-year-old continuous political-organizational activity of Polish peasant ac¬
tivists and stem from relation towards political reality (after
1989)
and aspiration to the awaited future.
Political thought of Polish Peasants Party emphasizes: democratic, national and Christian values
in triad: Agriarism-Neoagriarism-Ecohumanism; balance in functioning of state authorities, economic
and political pluralism, peaceful relations on international scene.

Political thought of liberal-democratic parties
Concepts of liberal parties were characterized by the tendency to build democratic Poland that
was connected with the West, with market economy in which citizens could shape their fate. The main
value is freedom of a human being on which life of an individual and society is based. Equality is under¬
stood as equality of chances and not as financial equality of citizens. Tolerance, receptiveness to various
attitudes, respect for different political and religious beliefs, cultural traditions were important
characteristic features of those parties.
The vision of political system was based on Montesquieu division of power. A characteristic fea¬
ture of the functioning of the political system is the idea of decentralization of public power and giving it
to citizens through local government structures, non-governmental organizations but the principle of
subsidiarity should be included. It ought to support the building of citizen s society whose main feature is
activity, resourcefulnes, responsibility and solidarity in actions for common good.
Economic views were based on such values as market, private property, free competition. During
economic changes in Poland, they stressed the importance of privatization and shaping of property rela¬
tions that suited the needs of a free market.
As far as foreign policy is concerned, they drew a vision in which Poland was connected with the
West, it was open to cooperation with other countries in the field of peace and safety and on these basis
Poland built its international position.
The realization of these programme postulates was connected with the way of gradual changes
based on compromise and cooperation of different ideological options for democracy construction and
citizens prosperity.

Socialists thought
Political thought of Polish Socialist Party referred to the period of the Second of Republic of Po¬
land i.e. to three basic categories: independence of a state, democracy and socialism. This last category
was treated rather as theoretical alternative to the imperfection of the system transformation process of
the state, especially in economy, than a real perspective. Socialists paid great attention to
subjectivization of an individual on the basis of his or her right to work and fulfilling his or her needs and
not on the basis of fortune. From this reason they emphasize the role of people of hired labour and for¬
mulated demands of multifaceted social policy.
The revived Polish Socialist Party constantly underlines its attachment to the principles of free¬
dom and equality which were to be completed in democratic state that was based on one-chamber parlia¬
ment, institutions of direct democracy, on the growing importance of territorial local government and
trade unions and also on political parties and non-governmental organizations.
Socialists, generally, accepted mechanisms of free market economy but on the basis of its func¬
tioning, they tended to formulate postulates concerning greater state s interference into economic pro¬
cesses. They always underlined the need of acceptance for a three-sector property model: state,
cooperative and private.
Polish Socialist Party absolutely supported the process of integration of our country with the Eu¬
ropean Union but under the condition of full membership. It also assumed good relations with all our
neighbours, including Russia that was undergoing democratic
proceses.

organizational, ideological-programme and political experience. Determination of ideolog¬
ical basis caused most of the problems because it wasn t enough to write them down in the programme
but there appeared necessity of internalization of values you were to serve and to develop on their basis
a coherent vision of changes. Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland reached for the values of Polish
democratic and socialist movement and after war European social democracy and re-interpreted them in
liberal spirit.
Process of transformation, after
1989,
confronted post-Polish United Workers social democracy
with the necessity of working out the final model of social-political system. Did it manage the task? As far
as political system is concerned it presented the project of state system that corresponded to standards of
liberal democracy. The role of the president and relations in the triangle: the head of state
-
parliament
-
government were interestingly described. They were situated within the frames of modified parliamen¬
tary-cabinet system. Many of those assumed solutions were introduced into the Constitution passed in
1997
under the government of Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland. But things were different as
far as economic system was concerned. Post-communist social democracy appeared unable to construct
the future model of social-economic system. Although it used such notions as democratic socialism ,
social market economy , third way , social state , which were to suggest society that it had such a vi¬
sion, but their content and meaning were not described. These categories were not figured out either the¬
oretically or descriptively. Both Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland and Democratic Left Alli¬
ance lacked deeper theoretical reflection whose main motive would be the answer to the question: where
after the fall of real socialism? Pragmatism understood as ability of winning elections became the most
important policy.
