The book studies the Moldavian musical manuscripts of Byzantine
tradition, proceeding from the collection of the
Noul Neamţ
(New Neamt) Monastery in Bessarabia, which is stored at present in
the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova, fund no.
2119.
The
musical sources of Byzantine neumatic notation, being the important part
of the library collection, are examined in the different foreshortenings
and the historical-temporary shear: in the organic context of the
multilingual Greco-Slav, Russian, Bulgarian and Romanian library
fund for orthodox musical-vocal literature of the
19*
century, in the
evolutionary aspect of the Byzantine musical tradition of the 17th -19 1
centuries, etc. Three manuscripts (inventory

nos.
4, 5,
6)
of the hieromonk Andronic, future father superior of monastery are
in the center of author s attention. These musical handwriting books
contain the chants for the Night Service and the Vespers, for the Matins
and for three Liturgies including the Funeral Service of Our Lord, God
and Savior Jesus Christ s body as well as the Polychronions.
The Byzantine chant manuscripts with the New Method notation
were made in
20-40
decades of the 19th century in Moldova, in
Secul
monastery as a component part of Neamt Monastery. They are
considered as the representative sources of ecclesiastic music of post-
Byzantine period and as the documents, which fixed the specific part of
the Byzantine musical repertoire, which circulated, beginning from the
first decades after the reform of Byzantine chanting and notation of
1814,
for a period of entire nineteenth century. The manuscripts, which were
written by hieromonk Andronic for the personal needs, nevertheless,
reflected the basic special features of the development process of the
Byzantine musical tradition in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Among them are: learning the results of the Three Teachers reform,
Jriľia Ciobanu-Suhomlin.

the national adaptation of theory and music itself, special features of
repertoire and book calligraphy, the bloom of printing, multilingual
aspects, etc. In the study found substantiation the arguments of historical,
paléographie,
stylistic, textological nature, which testify about the
belonging of the manuscripts to the Neamt s musical tradition of post-
Byzantine chanting, reflecting many general trends in the development
of the Byzantine musical heritage of this period.
Together with the manuscripts of psaltic music, is examined the copy
of musical grammar on the Moldavian Cyrillic alphabet, named propedia,
which is dated by the first decades of the nineteenth century. This copy
represents standard model of the genre of the brief musical-theoretical
guide of the eighteenth
-
beginning of the nineteenth centuries. The text
of the source from the New Neamt s collection contains preliminary,
initial information from the theory of Byzantine chant and its notation
of the transition period
-
from the old to the new one. Propedia from the
first autochthonic musical manuscript of Byzantine tradition entitled The
Rumanian Psaltiki by Filothei sin
Agai Jipei
(1713),
translated from the
Greek to the native language, undoubtedly, has served as proto-graph
for discussed grammar.
The manuscript sources of the New Neamt s collection became
occasion for considering the wide circle of questions from the field
of Byzantine musical paleography, system of modes, terminological
problems of the Byzantine theory of music, problem of some genres,
national experience of the adaptation to the centuries-old tradition in
the context of the wide synchronistic shear of orthodox music in the
19th century.
