The History of Asnyk Library in
Kalisz
This book is devoted to the history of the Asnyk Library from the time of its inception to
the present day. The Asnyk Library was established in
1906,
together with the Adam Asnyk So¬
ciety for Popular Study. At the time, access was restricted to members of the society, which ran
a very wide range of activities, organising both evening lectures and literacy courses. In
1909,
the Asnyk Society s own, Polish-speaking primary school, consisting of one class, was launched.
Thanks to the sacrifice and commitment of its members, the society was able to introduce a pro¬
cess of polonisation and to disseminate knowledge within the realities of life under the Russian
partition.
The Society s library itself was opened in January
1907.
It rapidly increased in size and by
1914
it held some
4,600
volumes, though only members of the Asnyk Society were able to avail
themselves of the collection. Every adult resident of
Kalisz
could join the Society and the annual
membership fee was far from exorbitant. The library survived the First World War, becoming
ever more important with the passage of time. It continued to operate under the auspices of the
A. Asnyk Society for Popular Study until that organisations dissolution in
1926.
It was then that
the book collection was taken over by Kalisz s local authorities, a Library Committee was establi¬
shed and, in
1927,
the Adam Asnyk Town Library was opened and continued to function until
1st
September
1939.
During the Second World War, a major part of the library s collection was
destroyed by me Germans.
In April
1945,
after the city s liberation, the library was rebuilt by the local authorities and
Adamina Dabkowska, who had already been running the library in
1939.
The seeds of the col¬
lection were those volumes which had been saved by the town hall
stařFduring
World War II and
books donated by the people of
Kalisz.
Street collections were also organised in aid of the library.
Initially based in the town hall, it underwent a number of moves. Finally, in
1952,
when it was
already a free public library, it found its permanent home at
Aleja Marszałka Stalina
27,
(now
Aleja Wolnoíci).
The Newspapers and Periodicals Reading Room had been free of charge ever
since it was first established in
1948.
In the
1950s,
the library s collection numbered
20,000
vo¬
lumes and its development was dynamic. By
1966,
it had
90,000
volumes, around
7000
mem¬
bers and consisted of the main library and four branches. In
1973,
the library was transformed
into the A. Asnyk Town and District Public Library. In
1975,
following administrative reforms
within Poland,
Kalisz
became a voivodship town and the A. Asnyk Voivodship Public Library
was established. This Jed not only to a rise in the library s prestige, but also to a significant quanti-

increase; the collection numbered
1,400,000
volumes and was used by
150 000
members
who, in
1976,
borrowed more than three million books. The newly-structured library consisted
of

branches in
Kalisz
and its voivodship and, at the time, had a staff of
255
employees in
the field of librarianship.
From
1945
onwards, the library has organised exhibitions, competitions and quizzes,
as well as arranging cultural and educational activities for its members, especially children and
young people. In
1986,
an important new branch was established, the Main Library, as a result
of which, the library was transformed into the A. Asnyk Voivodship and Town Public Library.
Consisting of
211
branches, the book collection amounted to around
2,400,000
and there were
145,000
members. Throughout the period of the Peoples Republic of Poland, from
1945
till
1989
(formally, from
1952)
the library was highly politicised, with both its collection and ac¬
tivities being heavily influenced, firsdy by the City Committee of the Polish United Workers
Party and then, froml975, by the Voivodship Committee of the Polish United Workers Party
in
Kalisz.
In
1999,
as a result of administrative reforms, the voivodship of
Kalisz
was abolished and
the A. Asnyk Town Public Library was founded, comprising the main library and

branches
in
Kalisz,
as well as librarianship, administrative and management departments. The library
is a cultural institution of great importance to
Kalisz,
cooperating with the media, other cultural
organisations and the local authorities. As well as organising numerous competitions connected
with the region, it also organises meetings with artists, scientists and scholars, just as the library
of the Asnyk Society once used to do.
