DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION
IN THE DEPOPULATED REGIONS
(on the example of North-Western Bulgaria)
(Summary)
Depopulation processes have occurred in many parts of the world at various
periods, and under different social and economic backgrounds. During the last
15
years depopulation became a severe problem to many regions in Bulgaria, for the
whole country, and most of Eastern Europe, as a consequence of economic and
social hardships during the so-called transition period .
The present research has been conceived as multidisciplinary one. For several
years we have been working on the problems of depopulation from various points of
view, using the different professional backgrounds of each member of the research
team: demography, geography, sociology. Our findings are reflecting the ideas that
each one of us has projected in the research; the main idea of the team is that
depopulation has many different sides. It is also expressed not only by the decrea¬
sing number and density of the population, but also by the changing age and sex
structure (demographic aging), the problems of emigration of young people out the
region, and out of the country, the psychological and health problems of lonely old
people, but above all

the severe need of the Bulgarian society to find new eco¬
nomic solutions in order to satisfy its basic needs, and to maintain the stability of
institutions and the social order.
Another concern that we encountered when studying depopulation, is directed
to the need of the Bulgarian society to preserve its traditions, and self identity, in a
situation where many values are being rejected without being replaced by new ones.
The ethnic pluralism provides additional challenge to the social and cultural inte¬
grity of Bulgarian society

at the national and at the regional levels. Our study
provides some new insights on these processes.
The profound transformation of economic and political life has created a high
level of unemployment, especially in rural areas, but also in many towns and cities
of North Western Bulgaria, as well as in other regions of the country. Impoverish¬
ment became a serious problem to many persons and families, especially to those
at age of retirement, as well as to younger people with low level of education, people
with heath problems, etc. At the same time the system of health care experienced a
profound transformation, in the process of synchronizing it with the mecha¬
nisms of market economy. This created many difficulties, especially for old and
vulnerable people, living in remote areas, who cannot receive proper information
about their entitlements, and sometimes do not know how to operate in the new
situation.
It is obvious that depopulation is a complex and serious problem of contempo¬
rary Bulgarian society. The various forms of its manifestation, and the impacts on
the society, the economy, the family, people s health, and demographic develop¬
ments, provide a large scope of research areas, which we have covered only partly.

For example, we have refrained from indicating and explaining the positive sides of
depopulation for the society, and for the individual people. We provide statistical
evidence for some of its sides in the North-Western region of Bulgaria, as they can
be revealed by the existing data. This region is characterized by a very high rate of
depopulation (in the national, as well as in the international perspective), which has
started in the previous periods (after World war II), but was accelerated in the tran¬
sition period. Some of the demographic indicators display an extremely high rate of
depopulation, especially in the rural areas.
In the book we provide information about some urgent problems, arising as a
consequence of depopulation, and we point out possible ways of creating a positive
social response to them.

IN THE DEPOPULATED REGIONS
(on the example of North-Western Bulgaria)
(Summary)
Depopulation processes have occurred in many parts of the world at various
periods, and under different social and economic backgrounds. During the last

years depopulation became a severe problem to many regions in Bulgaria, for the
whole country, and most of Eastern Europe, as a consequence of economic and
social hardships during the so-called "transition period".
