offered a convincing argument that Yale manuscript is Kotru-
ljeviďs
own work and a treatise of great merit both with reference to
the time of writing and in particular to its content. On both counts this
is the first comprehensive discourse on navigation not only in the Cro¬
atian but also in the European literature.
Apart from the dedicatory introduction in Latin, the language of the
work is the Italian, Neapolitan dialect with elements of Venetian usage,
particularly in the vocabulary. The orthography is inconsistent: elemin-

With regard to spelling, manuscript forms have been followed and
all inconsistencies have been left unchanged as long as the text remai¬
