MODERNIZATION OF UPBRINGING AND EDUCATION
IN SLOVAKIA IN THE SECOND HALF
OF THE 20th CENTURY
(Attempts and researches)
The aim of this historical work is to supplement the missing mosaic of the
still (after the revolution in
1989)
more synthetically non-elaborated issue in its
wider cultural as well as social context. The work of E.
Londáková
is a part of
the program with regard to the deepening of complex knowledge concerning
cultural development in Slovakia after
1945.
After the monograph Predjarie.
Political, Economical and Cultural Development in Slovakia in
I960 - 1967
(Bratislava, Veda
2002),
in which (as co-author with
M. Londák
and S.
Sikora)
she focused on cultural situation in Slovakia in 1960 s, she is now coming with
an original monograph, that deals with the issue regarding education in Slovakia
at the turn of the 1950 s and 1960 s.
The communist system of education, which had been radically changed af¬
ter
1948
faced in the studied period first problems caused by financial undersi-
zing, relentless deficiency of qualified educationists, undeveloped pedagogical
theory strictly linked with the Soviet science, homogenous public system, con¬
solidation of education and its isolation from international inputs.
In connection to the gradually stagnating economy at that time political eli¬
tes in Czechoslovakia started to seek new solutions that would have pushed it
forward to the level of capitalistic countries which have followed the way of
economic prosperity in the observed period. Their attention was paid also to
the system of education, which should have had more considerable share in the
development of economy as well as the whole society.
The author follows the historical tradition but also the cultural and social
role of education in Slovakia, which is referred to in the first chapter of the
monograph. In one of the sub-chapters, the author describes several key sources
of the communist education policy in a way that the reader can understand the
essence of the change of the whole educational philosophy after the communist
coup in Czechoslovakia. The end of the chapter is dedicated to the winners
and losers of the altered political system in Czechoslovakia. The accent was
put on the destiny of ecclesiastical private system of education, which must

have bowed to the new (socialist) school and left wing intellectuals who have
replaced the people who were not comfortable for the new regime in order to
take place in high government functions. However, they did not last there for a
long time. Some of them were later accused of the so called bourgeois nationa¬
lism and had to involuntary leave the political scene and faced both the jail and
political execution. The author tries to offer an objective view on the studied
period and therefore to show not only the negative aspects but also the positive
ones as well as the contribution to the development of Slovakia.
The other two chapters of the monograph appear as key chapters. They deal
with concrete issues with regard to the system of education in a context of the
then economical and social situation. Gradually follow attempts to make the
system of education more efficient through a widely supported program, the so
called conjunction of school with life , that should bring nearer contact with
the needs of the society, better preparation of graduates for professional life. It
is about the optimal ways to fulfil this top priority task through launching of pri¬
mary simple solutions
-
realized through handicraft practice, polytechnization
of all school levels, restructuring of vocational schooling, development of the
qualification of adults, out of school education, etc. The author tries to indicate
the most typical issues of the chosen type and level of professional qualification
on a modelling analysis (agricultural education).
However, at the end of the 1960 s the quality of approach related to this is¬
sue is being changed. More sophisticated, elaborated methods and ways toward
modernization have been searched for which would give more variability to the
school in order to reflect the new knowledge of science and technology better,
as well as the ability to bring more optimal communication between the school
and science as well as practice. Arrival of the new generation, not burdened with
old traumas and traditional conventions, and which was open to everything new
and was expecting without respect more than its fathers have achieved, enabled
to develop in a short time both post-industrial and post-modern future. It started
to write really dynamic chapters of a new political, industrial as well as cultural
epoch of a modern world in a way that it should become a part of new biotech-
nological, informational, intergenerational and multimedia processes that have
radically changed the old world s face.
