The Bibliography of Polish History
by

Finkel.
The Outline of the Monograph
Summary
Bibliografía
Historii Polskiej
by
Ludwik
Finkel
originated on the turn of the
19th and 20th century in the period when First Republic of Poland
(Commonwealth of the Two Nations) did not exist as the independent country.
Polish independence ended in a series of Partitions
(1772, 1793
and
1795)
undertaken by Russia, Prussia and Austria. The country was finally divided in
1795
into three parts between the Kingdom of Russia, Prussia and Austria,
existed for about two centuries as three different political parts. However, the
striving of Polish patriots to regain their independence could not be
extinguished. The economic and cultural merging for many decades overtook
official and international
reconstitution
of the Polish (Second Republic of
Poland) state which happened, realized in
1919.
Paradoxically, the discussed period was the golden age of the development
of the Polish bibliography in its all forms and contents. The bibliography
merged all three Partitions and patriotic emigrations culturally into one
independent state organism.
The Bibliography of Poland
(Bibliografía

by
Karol

Finkel,
the Geographical Dictionary of the
Kingdom of Poland and others Slavic Countries

university centers in
Warsaw, Cracow and Lvov consolidated the unity of the culture of both the
Polish academic community and all Polish intelligence. The history of Poland,
but especially a period of the independent Polish state, played the significant
role in this process what Prof.
Ludwik
Finkel
knew very well together with the
whole community of the University of
Jan Kazimierz
in Lvov.
Ludwik
Finkel
to a rare degree, was predestined to create the Bibliography
of Polish History exquisitely difficult scientifically and delicate of politically
setting undertake. The first-class erudite person whose an extremely important
advantage was the fact that he fluently spoke five modern languages as well as
the classical ones, coming through it champion of
Xavier
Liskego from the
Leopold

school, had the awareness of the substantive necessity of making
up the Bibliography of Polish History. Of bibliography which would become the

Ludwik
Finkel
had impressive support from
Jan Kazimierz
University com¬
munity and the majority of the Galician intelligentsia for several dozen years
(from giving the first volume out in
1891
to
-
to the last supplement in
1914)
brought his work to the conclusion.
Finkel,
as a master of finished tasks ,
carried this gigantic undertaking out leading the object sequence of the Bibliog¬
raphy until
1815
(the Congress of Vienna), and all historical publications until
1910.
The description of principles of the data collection, of the consecutive
stages of creating the bibliography and building its run in the French-speaking
introduction to the Bibliography.
Finkel s work being the competent fusion of German scientific solidity and
the
Lwów
patriotism (Lvov gained the honorable nickname semper Fidelis for
Polish crown), met with the enthusiastic reception of Polish and foreign
intellectual circles and waited until several dozens of positive reviews and
describings. Unfortunately, he met also with the reluctant acceptance from some
Ukrainian circles (Mykhailo Hrushevsky and
Nikolaj
Ljubovich), and German
(Maxymilian
Perlbach).
The problem with the dispute with Ukrainian and German societies was not
only scientific. It was also concerned by the integrity of some territories of former
Poland (Ukraine, Silesia,
Pomerania, Masuria),
which
Finkel
comprehended as
the integral parts of Commonwealth of the Two Nations
(I Rzeczypospolita)
but
linked to the country on different levels of subordinations. The discussion with
M.
Perlbach
had purely substantive character, while with M. Hrushevsky was
not only substantive but also emotional. The circle of Polish historians was
strongly supporting Finkel s point of view.
The brilliance of Bibliography and charisma, with which
Finkel
was pleased
at, resulted in it, around all next undertakings on the field of current and
retrospective (period after the Congress of Vienna) bibliography of Polish
history, were based on his assumptions and experience. Only after the year the
scientific practice and the specificity of sources till the history of Poland in the
period of the Partitions decided
1932
about partial leaving methodical arran¬
gements of
Ludwik
Finkel,
especially a large bibliographic data sharing applied
by him for sources and
monographies.

taken already in the independent Polish state by

Bronisław Włodarski)
unfortunately, failed. From different
personal, organizational and conceptual reasons which extensively are describing
in chapter III, and because of the World War Second
,
the re-edition was never
carried out.
In
1951
they made an anastatic reprint of the Finkel s whole work, without
no correction of the contents of the Bibliography. Partially it was replaced by
Bibliography of the History of Poland edited by Helena
Madurowicz-Urbańska,
but only on an average advanced level.
Until today (nowadays) the Bibliography of
Ludwik

in the form in
which it was created by him in the 19th and 20th century (the Golden age of
Polish bibliography), remains the achievement of this period next to the
