The volume of Latvian War Songs has been compiled by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art,
Archives of Latvian Folklore at the University of Latvia, as part of an ongoing project, the publication
of a multi-volume series of the academic edition
Latviešu tautas muzika
(Latvian Folk Music)1. This
collection has incorporated songs collected and documented over a time period of more than
100
years
-
since the first publications of
Jãnis
Cimze s Dziesmu rota (SongOrnament) 18722 to the
19805.
The
volume includes musical manuscripts from the large collection of notes and transcripts of the Archives
of Latvian Folklore.
Although it is almost impossible to define the connection of the war songs with certain historical
events, it is believed tJiat most of them, considering the stylistics of their texts, are from the 18th century
and on, when the territory of Latvia was incorporated into the Russian Empire and Latvian soldiers
into the Tsar s army. Along with songs about mercenaries and lamenting recruits, the Latvian war song
cycle includes songs about serving one s fatherland, the hardships of military service, the battle with
the Turks (Russia s war with Turkey in the

8th century)
,
as well as reminiscences of the Napoleonic war
with Russia in the beginning of the 19th century. A special place in this collection of war songs is held by
the so-called lyrico-epical romances, for example, Aiz tiem augstiem kalniem
Kari karojäs

up the mountain I climbed);

Exactly this
group of songs is widely represented in this publication.
Latvian war song melodies have been documented from all over Latvia. They are mostly lengthy
songs with a narrative plot and brilliant lyrico-epical elements. Therefore, the performance of these
songs is dominated by a broadly developed wide-range lyrical melodies, whereby the narrative or
recitative-like
(teiktãs)
melodies are not as prevalent. In general, the lyrization process of songs as
portrayed in the Latvian war songs, as well as their so-called songlike
(dziedamãs)
melodies, can be
considered a phenomenon of late origin. The melodies of the war songs are primarily based on major or
minor scales, which is characteristic of the age of Enlightenment
-
beginning with the
XVII
and
XVIII
centuries, and which also defined the most widely known songs of the
XIX
century. However, along
with these major or minor melodies, a comparatively large number of war songs are based on modal
scales, with occasional key changes. Besides the relatively late melodies, some war songs undoubtedly
reflect the daily events of earlier lifestyles. One can assume that traditional war song melodies were
continuously enhanced and renewed by the introduction of new melodic material. War songs have
become more lyrical, bringing them closer to social songs.

is the first collection of harmonized Latvian folk song melodies.
The collection has eight volumes. The seventh and eighth volumes were released after J. Cimze s death in
1884.

The war songs melodical material does not allow for chronological systemization, therefore,
a thematic approach to their systemization has been selected, based on the textual order used in the
edition
Latviešu
tautasdziesmas (Latvian Folksongs)3. This method was chosen with the purpose of
alleviating the comparison of textual and melodic materials from both volumes. Just as in the previously
mentioned publication of war song texts, the contents of this volume is comprised of five chapters with
defined thematic groups.
As most Latvian folksongs, the melodies included in this edition are often multi-functional, that
is, they can be performed using various texts. In this case, war songs have been defined as those which
contain texts that in some way touch on the topic of war. Whereby, not all of them are exact war songs.
One must also take into consideration that most often the singers
{teicëjas)
were women and the texts
express not only the soldiers view, but also the stance of those left behind.
This war songs edition is formed following the tradition of previous volumes of the series
Latviešu
tautas
muzika .
All melodies have been transposed into the same relative key system, noting in the
beginning the original pitch. This approach, although simplifies the comparison of melodies, in certain
cases as when many variations of a single melody are present, may create obvious problems. This occurs
when a melody is in a modal scale. For example, if the foundation of a melody, or its variant, is in the
frigian mode, when transposing this melody s
е
-flat, a double flat alteration must be used. In other
words, recalling its key, which, in reality, conflicts with music theory principles.
The war songs volume mainly includes unpublished materials, which were obtained from the
annual expeditions of the Archives of Latvian Folklore4, as well as previous publications. Melodies
have been published only with those texts which were documented together with the melody. A few
melodies are without texts, where collectors did not assign texts. Only tempo markings as noted by the
collectors have been included. Unfortunately, these markings are limited and generalized, often tempo
markings are not mentioned. In addition, most musical materials from the Archives of Latvian Folklore
originated from the collectors documenting the melodies by ear, rather than from recordings.
Each of the published war song melodies is supplied with the following information: singers
name, address, date and place of birth, collector s name, the year of documentation,
ALF
register
number or other source number. In cases where the singer s place of birth coincides with the place of
documentation, this is not expressly notated. Place names correspond to the administrative territorial
division used at the time of documentation.
The first chapter

(The titmouse sings of war) includes songs depicting the
premonition of going off to war. Here and furthermore each thematic group is arranged by the melody s
tone-row features, listing at first those in a minor scale, then those in a major scale, subsequently
expanding in range. The songs melodic form does not always allow for a strict enforcement of this kind
of grouping. In cases where one melody has been documented with various texts, these texts appear
alongside the melody, allowing for slight deviations from the thematic sequence. The second chapter
Es, karã
aiziedams (As I was going to war) entails songs dealing with going to war. They express the
emotions of both the soldiers themselves and those left at home. This is the largest Latvian war song
group which has been disseminated in many different variants throughout Latvia. The third chapter
Karavïra lïgavina (A
soldiers bride) compiles songs, which, one way or another, are related to the
soldiers bride left at home and frequently reflect the bride s grief for her beloved being sent off to war.

Taking into consideration that during the time period from the end of the 18th century to the army s
reform in
1874,
the peasants

had to serve in the Russian Tsar s army for

years, most often,
these soldiers never returned home. The songs in the fourth chapter Kungi
mani
karã
suta
(The lords
sent me off to war) discuss serving in foreign regiments under the command of foreign lords. Here one
must recall the specifics of the historic course of Latvia s wars, where, in fact, Latvian soldiers did not
go to war by their free will. The apprehension of going off to war combined with the resignation of
their inevitable destiny is reflected in many song texts. Consequently, there are also songs expressing
an opposite view. The fifth chapter
Redz, kur
staiti
karavïri
(Look, the stately soldiers) includes songs
with texts which reveal the soldier s everyday life.
This volume compiles
608
Latvian war song melodies, which have branched out into many
variations. Melody variants documented from different time periods allows one to follow the historic
course of Latvian war song documentation, as well as serves as an indirect testimony to their widespread
popularity in society.
This publication includes a CD
-
a selection of Latvian war songs, which incorporates audio
recordings taken from the Archives of Latvian Folklore expeditions from
1951
to
1971.
Although
the technical quality, according to the recording opportunities of that time period which were also
influenced by the established methods used in collecting folklore,5 is not very high, the recordings
reflect the genuine sound of the documented music transcripts published in this volume taken from
the mid-to late- 20th century. These recordings also offer a small glimpse into audio collection of the
Archives of Latvian Folklore.

Up until the late
20*
century, the collection of folklore in Latvia was dominated by the position that the optimal method
of saving and publishing melodies was by musical note transcription. Most melody transcriptions, if those collecting the
folklore were musically trained, were done by ear, however audio recordings were done with the aim of creating transcripts.
This position was reviewed and rejected only in the
1980
s. This publication, which continues in the same manner as previous
volumes, can primarily be viewed as a collection of musical transcripts. The CD offers only a small illustrative glimpse into
Latvian war song melodies.
