By the early years of the nineteenth century,
Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven had become a
catchphrase
—
a commonplace expression signify¬
ing musical excellence. From Vienna, the fame of these
three composers spread rapidly outward across Europe and
into the New World, and contemporary critics ranked
Beethoven as the only musician worthy to stand beside
Haydn and Mozart.
For most of his career, Haydn was little more than a
liveried servant who spent his days at the beck and call of
the
Esterházy
court, but by
1780
his music had become
famous across Europe. Blessed with a lively sense of humor,
Haydn delighted in identifying his audience s expectations
and then confounding them in works that now bear nick¬
names like The Joke (in which a catchy theme belies a
sophisticated underlying structure and several false endings
leave the audience unsure of when to applaud) and Surprise
(in which a sudden
finissimo
crash on a weak beat in the
slow movement snaps the casual listener out of a doze).
Mozart, on the other hand, became an independent
freelancer, a lifestyle that afforded him unparalleled compo¬
sitional (if not financial) freedom. Identified by Haydn as
the greatest composer known to me either in person or by
name, Mozart benefited from Haydn s inspiration and
went on to create even greater works.
The high classical style that marked the last two
decades of the eighteenth century culminated in an impos¬
ing succession of undisputed masterpieces. During the
1780s, Mozart wrote his most famous operas and instru¬
mental works. Haydn followed by producing his greatest
symphonies, string quartets, masses, and oratorios. And
onto this field indisputably dominated by these two giants
came young Beethoven, an irascible and talented young man
who would one day succeed them both. By
1809,
critic
E. T.
A. Hoffmann was able to judge that instrumental
music has now risen to a level of which one probably had
no inkling not so long ago, and that the symphony, especially
following the impetus it received from Haydn and Mozart,
has become the ultimate form of instrumental music.
Completing the trilogy begun with Haydn, Mozart
and the Viennese School,
1740—1780
and continued in
Music in European Capitah: The
Galant
Style,
1720-1780,
Daniel Heartz concludes his extensive chronicle of the
Classical Era with this much-anticipated third volume.
Mozart, Haydn and Early Beethoven,
1781-1802
winds up
the careers of Mozart and Haydn and describes Beethoven s
first decade in Vienna, when he began composing by pat¬
terning his works on the two masters. The tumult and
instability of the French Revolution and Napoleons rise to
power serve as a vivid historical backdrop for the tale.
