adam_text | The Paradox of Prosperity continues the his¬
torical project of coming to terms with
the vibrant society of the Netherlands in the
seventeenth century. It does so by exploring the
world of book publishers, printers, and sellers
in the city of Leiden. This was a world estab¬
lished on modest foundations, like so much of
Dutch society, but quickly brought to a flour¬
ishing state that extended its influence far be¬
yond its city and, indeed, the Republic. Today,
the Netherlands, a small non-English speaking
country, is a major international publishing
center in a world dominated by the English
language. In the seventeenth century, it had
been a major international publishing center in
a Europe divided by religion and increasingly
dominated by the French language. Publishing
has deep roots in Dutch political culture, com¬
mercial activity, and religious life. It is not too
much to say that books were as much an ex¬
pression of seventeenth-century Dutch society
as were paintings.
Laura Cruz explores the world of the book
trades as it was constructed
m
Leiden in the de¬
cades after the Revolt against Spanish rule. She
traces the migration to Leiden of printers from
the Southern Netherlands, observes how they
congregate within the city and seek contracts
with the city s new university. But this is only
the beginning of a multifaceted analysis of the
development of a market-driven industry that
eventually is organized under the protective
umbrella of a guild. And this guild, in turn, is
something other than the traditional guilds of
medieval origins. Rather than a bulwark against
market forces, the guild of the printers was an
instrument to exercise market power. This book
offers a fresh look at the role of an institution
that is often dismissed, even in the early mod¬
ern period, as a relic of an earlier time.
