Summary
The following work is the first publication on this topic in Polish, excluding
some minor newspaper articles. It is at the same time an extended and corrected
version of a master's thesis written by the author in
1988
whilst a student at the
Jagiellonian University (Department of Philosophy and History) in Crakow.
The book describes the highly dramatic history of Austria,
Styria
and
Krain
dur¬
ing the struggle for the Babenberg inheritance
(1246-1278).
The beginning of these events is marked by the death of the last male representa¬
tive of the ruling Babenberg dynasty on
15
June
1246
by the river Leitha. The rulers
of neighbouring countries, married to various female representatives of the Baben¬
berg dynasty, were the first to fight for the inheritance. Their right to it was based
on the so called
„Privilegium
minus", issued on
17
September
1156
in
Regensburg
by emperor Frederick
Barbarossa.
By virtue
ofthat
document in case of extinction
of the male line of Austrian princes, the female line was to inherit the lands.
The author demonstrates the complicated political situation by the river Dan¬
ube in that period. In
1246,
the Babenberg heritage was passed on to the Margrave
of Moravia Vladislaus, husband of Gertrude of Austria, son of the Bohemian king
Wenceslaus
I Přemyslid.
After his early death on
3
January
1247
the abandoned Dan¬
ube fief was taken by emperor Frederick II Hohenstauf, who had wielded power
in that territory by the authority of his governor,
Otto von Eberstein,
until
1248.
Upon
the last governor's abdication, the emperor appointed new governors: the prince
of Bavaria Otto II
-
in Austria, and count
Görz
Meinhard III in
Styria
and
Krain.
In late
1246,
the king of Hungaiy
Béla
IV claimed the Babenberg heritage, despite the
fact that neither he nor any of his sons married a Babenberg princess. In early
1247
he
was even supported by pope Innocent IV In
1249,
Hermann from Baden, husband
of Gertrude of Austria, came to the Austrian throne. However, he died on
4
October
1250,
which followed the death of emperor Frederick II on
13
December
1250.
The struggle for the inheritance continued between Otto from Bavaria and the
son of a Bohemian king and Margrave of Moravia

February
1252,

Ottokar

married Margaret of Austria, a widow of the German king Henry, the son of em¬
peror Frederick II.
Years
1252-1253
were a period of intense fights between
Přemysl
Ottokar II
and the king of Hungary
Béla
TV, who managed to settle down in the east of Austria
to eventually withdraw to Russia in
1253.
The conflict ended on
3
April
1254
with
a peace treaty signed in
Ofen,
which temporarily settled the division of the Baben-
berg inheritance: Austria and northern
Styria
were left in the hands of
Přemysl
Ot¬
tokar,
while the rest of
Styria
was given to
Bela
IV However,
Béla's
newly acquired
land was the subject of yet another war in
1259,
which ended in the defeat of the
king of Hungary on
12
July
1260
by Kroissenbrunn, near
Hainburg.
As a result
of the
1261
Vienna peace treaty the power over all of Austria and
Styria
was given
to
Přemysl
Ottokar,
who was crowned king of Bohemia on
25
December
1261.
Before the coronation took place, however, he sent away his rightful wife Margaret
and married Kunegunda, the Hungarian king's granddaughter.
In late
1269,
after
Ulrich
III Spanheim's death,
Přemysl
Ottokar
II conquered
Kärnten
and
Krain
as well as northern Italy. The
1271
and
1273
military expedi¬
tions should also be linked to the contest for the Babenberg heritage: both were
organised by the Bohemian king against Hungary, and gave him temporary control
over many cities in the western Hungary.
The situation changed when Rudolf from
Habsburg
was chosen to be the king
of Germany in
1273.
The new ruler started to demand the Babenberg lands from
Přemysl
Ottokar
II. He had the right to do so, as they were officially the abandoned
emperor's fiefs, and the Czech ruler was no longer married to Margaret of Austria.
In
1276,
Rudolf from
Habsburg
embarked on a military expedition to Austria and
Styria
and as he conquered these countries,
Přemysl
Ottokar was
forced to retreat.
Unable to accept his defeat, the king of Bohemia brought reinforcements from
Brandenburg, Meissen, Poland,
Pomerania
and Russia, and launched a military
campaign against the German ruler. The decisive battle took place on
26
August
1278
between Diirnkrut and Jendespeigen in Lower Austria.
Přemysl
Ottokar II
died during the fight and the Babenberg inheritance hence went to Rudolf from
Habsburg
whose dynasty managed to keep it until
1918.
The events that took place in
1246-1278
were the most turbulent in the his¬
tory of Austria; the constant wars led the country to an economic downfall. Many
towns were destroyed, not to mention villages or single castles. Invaders took many
captives. The Lower Austria suffered the most, some regions being completely de¬
populated. The principles of Austria and
Styria
are the ones to blame here, as their
division into competing groups attracted many pillage expeditions to those lands.
