The main issue and leitmotif οι this book is the issue of identity - understandings of this concept, types of identity with consideration for its multiple dimensions and aspects, as well as its components and the means by which it functions. Simultaneously, I raised questions concerning the strategies for transferring the private fatherland onto a new ethnic space; social memory and its elements; bonds and a sense of solidarity among members of the diaspora; and an overcoming of the feeling of strangeness. Presented herein are the identity strategies of the Armenian minority which, on the one hand, cares for the preservation of its own differentiation while, on the other, seeks to avoid conflicts in the receiving country, usually applying assimilation strategies. Based on the conclusions of research in the fields of sociology and religion, this book explains the peculiarity of Armenian nation whose lot, despite its long presence in Poland, remains only vaguely known. A look at the presented facts, based on historical events, is intended to familiarize the reader with the contribution which the Annenian people have made to Polish culture and to overcome negative stereotypes functioning about this group in these two cities. An important reference point is the religious distinction of the Armenians, the majority of whom are members of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Their emotional attitude towards Armenia determines their sense of national identity, as well as their attitude towards Christianity and the Armenian rite which, in turn, is a determinant of their Armenian religious identity. The main, empirical part of the book presents analyses of the material gathered via structured, in-depth interviews. Individual identity is analyzed above all on the basis of the auto-identification of respondents, with special attention drawn to the issue of a sense of identity vis-a-vis the linguistic and cultural criteria dividing the group internally. The experience of personal identity is shown in the context of self-image - that is, the means of 381 perceiving one s own image in relation to one s own and alien groups, including the ethnic image. Collective identity manifests itself as a symbolic universe which includes, among other things, the biblical origin of the Armenian nation, the chaczkar (a cult object integrating the diaspora), the Armenian genocide, as well as the Armenian way of life. Despite the invisibility of religious activity, fór the Armenian diaspora the religion itself and membership in the Armenian church is situated in both the personal and group identity. Religious rituals - especially of birth, christening, marriage or funeral - play an important role in the structure of their identity. Armenian identity is also connected with celebration of holy days. We may claim that the faith is considered as inherent, natural equipment unassociated with a need to manifest it externally. Operationalized religion as religiosity was analyzed within specific parameters. The research demonstrates that the Christian faith is a key criterium for Armenian belonging. Although members of the two diaspora groups do not declare a significant devotion to religious practice, this study revealed that practice of a religious nature is, in fact, frequent and regular. Religion - especially religiosity - is a personal issue for the Armenians participating in this research study; nonetheless, interlocutors willingly touch on religious matters, particularly stressing the dates linked to the christianization of Armenia. Certainly worth emphasizing is the positive and open relation towards all Christians. However, despite the significant religious involvement of members of the diaspora, there is a certain discrepancy between the personal attitudes of Armenians and the official stance of the Armenian church itself. Taking into consideration the reasons for the clearly declared affirmative opinion of Armenians regarding all Christians (here described as Christian religiousity), two motivations for such an approach are possible. The first is that the basis for a religious connection to all other Christians is a biblical justification of their own genesis. The main issue and leitmotif οι this book is the issue of identity - understandings of this concept, types of identity with consideration for its multiple dimensions and aspects, as well as its components and the means by which it functions. Simultaneously, I raised questions concerning the strategies for transferring the private fatherland onto a new ethnic space; social memory and its elements; bonds and a sense of solidarity among members of the diaspora; and an overcoming of the feeling of "strangeness." Presented herein are the identity strategies of the Armenian minority which, on the one hand, cares for the preservation of its own differentiation while, on the other, seeks to avoid conflicts in the receiving country, usually applying assimilation strategies. Based on the conclusions of research in the fields of sociology and religion, this book explains the peculiarity of Armenian nation whose lot, despite its long presence in Poland, remains only vaguely known. A look at the presented facts, based on historical events, is intended to familiarize the reader with the contribution which the Annenian people have made to Polish culture and to overcome negative stereotypes functioning about this group in these two cities. An important reference point is the religious distinction of the Armenians, the majority of whom are members of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Their emotional attitude towards Armenia determines their sense of national identity, as well as their attitude towards Christianity and the Armenian rite which, in turn, is a determinant of their Armenian religious identity. The main, empirical part of the book presents analyses of the material gathered via structured, in-depth interviews. Individual identity is analyzed above all on the basis of the auto-identification of respondents, with special attention drawn to the issue of a sense of identity vis-a-vis the linguistic and cultural criteria dividing the group internally. The experience of personal identity is shown in the context of self-image - that is, the means of 381 perceiving one's own image in relation to one's own and alien groups, including the ethnic image. Collective identity manifests itself as a symbolic universe which includes, among other things, the biblical origin of the Armenian nation, the chaczkar (a cult object integrating the diaspora), the Armenian genocide, as well as the Armenian way of life. Despite the invisibility of religious activity, fór the Armenian diaspora the religion itself and membership in the Armenian church is situated in both the personal and group identity. Religious rituals - especially of birth, christening, marriage or funeral - play an important role in the structure of their identity. Armenian identity is also connected with celebration of holy days. We may claim that the faith is considered as inherent, "natural equipment" unassociated with a need to manifest it externally. Operationalized religion as religiosity was analyzed within specific parameters. The research demonstrates that the Christian faith is a key criterium for Armenian belonging. Although members of the two diaspora groups do not declare a significant devotion to religious practice, this study revealed that practice of a religious nature is, in fact, frequent and regular. Religion - especially religiosity - is a personal issue for the Armenians participating in this research study; nonetheless, interlocutors willingly touch on religious matters, particularly stressing the dates linked to the christianization of Armenia. Certainly worth emphasizing is the positive and open relation towards all Christians. However, despite the significant religious involvement of members of the diaspora, there is a certain discrepancy between the personal attitudes of Armenians and the official stance of the Armenian church itself. Taking into consideration the reasons for the clearly declared affirmative opinion of Armenians regarding all Christians (here described as Christian religiousity), two motivations for such an approach are possible. The first is that the basis for a religious connection to all other Christians is a biblical justification of their own genesis.
