Summary
This book is the fruit of the authors longstanding interest in the subject of landed
gentry and especially in manorial architecture. The evidence of material culture of the landed
gentry, such as manors, paries, grange buildings and so-called small architecture , was totally
destroyed in the times of the Polish Peoples Republic. It was a result of conscious actions
of the Communist authorities wanting to annihilate all traces of the nobility and manorial
estates.
The book attempts to present and analyse the process of emergence of the great landed
estates in the
Łomża
district, together with their development and transformation. The first
grants were made at the turn of the H 1 and

century, when Masovia dukes began
developing these lands. With the lapse of time the original grants were transformed due to
their divisions within family, marriages or sales. A majority of them were divided into
smaller estates or even parcelled out between local peasants. The process of shrinking of
farmland of the
Folwark
was especially visible from the
1
9 1 century on, which was a turning
point for the great estates. At that time, after the land was granted to peasants in
1864,
began the transition from the feudal economy to capitalist mode of estate management. In
this situation the gentry had not only to change the organisation of works at the estate, but
also to invest large sums of money. The end of the 19th century was also a period of intensive
development of manorial industries, especially distilleries which greatly increased profitability
of the estate. To this time dates also a majority of the analysed residential layouts.
A special attention was paid to the interwar period, when due to the destruction of
the World War I and Bolshevik aggression landowners had to restore their estates with great
efforts. It were the years of intensive, hard work, but also of leisure, hunting and lively social
life. The evidence, though, is to be seen only in yellowed photographs and scraps of docu¬
ments. The last eyewitnesses of those days are passing away.
By the end of the interwar period in the analysed area there were over
50
estates, with
46
of them in private hands. Among them dominated the small and medium-sized estates
with the area under
500
ha. Only nine were of the area between
500
and
1000
ha, and
°nly three:
Grądy Woniecko,
Stawiski and Pniewo, had over
1000
ha. Paradoxically, this
world was not destroyed by the World
Wir
II, with its two successive occupations: of the
Germans and Soviets, but by the compulsory lotting out of big estates in
1944
and
1945 #57
that for ever changed the structure of Polish village, depriving it of its manorial centre
existing for centuries.
The analysed district has never been a subject of complex historical research. An
additional difficulty arises from the fact that a part of the manors was destroyed during the
WWII, and a majority of establishments was devastated and in consequence dismantled in
the time of the Polish Peoples Republic. This was the reason why I had to refer to the
memories of the people remembering the time before the year of
1939
or their families. In
some cases the material gathered during this research turned out to be very abundant, and
at the same time unique. Never published, preserved in private hands, it is an extremely
valuable source of knowledge.
The book is divided into two parts thematically interrelated. The first one, of theo¬
retical character, describes how the estate took shape gradually over the centuries, with both
its economic and social aspects, against the background of Polish history. The source basis
was provided by the literature on the subject, historical memoirs and material gathered in
the course of archival search query. At the end, there is an analysis of the presented estates,
with special emphasis put on their architectural designs. They were categorised into five
chronological groups:
1)
from the first grants to the

8th century;
2)
the
18
century;
3)
the
first half of the 19th century;
4)
the second half of the 19th century; and finally
5)
the turn
of the 19th and 20 11 century.
The second part is a comprehensive catalogue including the detailed descriptions of
over
50
large estates. It contains also the concise history of emergence and ownership
transformation process of the presented estates, with presentation of the owing families.
This is supplemented by brief descriptions of the whole layout, including manor house and
farming part. The part is richly illustrated by
iconographie
material: the photographs of the
analysed estates, layouts plans and drawings, frequently of the character of reconstruction.
Their value being even greater because a large majority of them does not exist, and there
are preserved only in the memory of their former owners. I would very much like the
catalogue to be a detailed description of all the estates in the
Łomża
district and at the same
time to provide a compendium of knowledge on the subject.
The photographic material seems to be a very valuable part of the book. Unfortunately,
in many cases there was quite impossible to completely document the estate due to the lack
of source material. Probably a lot of material is still to discover. I sincerely hope that the
book will provide an incentive to such research. By the end there is a table listing all the
landed estates existing in the district of
Łomża
on August
31, 1931,
with their last owner,
location, area and the date of nationalisation. It is supplemented by the list of the identified
estates plotted out in the interwar period.
Polish manor house as a cultural and historic phenomena accompanied the village
over six hundred years. It was a centre of education, agrarian progress, depositary of national
mementos and a place where the most patriotic youth was bred. Once full of life, full of
people who lived and worked there, after the war became an object of devastation and
purposeful damages. The owners, driven out from their estates by the compulsory natio¬
nalisation in
1944-1945,
have never received compensation in any form. The book is the
first and at the same time the only such a comprehensive study dedicated to this region of

Poland, so far evoking moderate interest of the art historians.
