SUMMARY
Tartu s centuries-old past contains many challenging episodes. The
years
1558-1708
turned out to be especially dramatic in the town s
history, with the government overthrown on eight occasions. In
1558
the Russians became masters of the town, in
1582
the Polish,
in
1600
the Swedes, in
1603
the Polish again, in
1625
once again the
Swedes, in
1656
the Russians, in
1661
again the Swedes, and finally
the Russians in
1704.
It was only twice during this period that
the change of power occurred without violence or a threat of vio¬
lence
-
in
1582
from Russia to Poland-Lithuania by the truce of Jam
Zapolski and in
1661
from Russia to Sweden by the peace of
Karde.
Altogether, the town was under Russian authority for thirty years,
spent forty years under the Polish, and eighty under the Swedes.
Tartu was besieged on nine occasions and only twice
(1559
and
1607)
did the enemy fail to conquer the town. The attempt in
1571,
fol¬
lowed by massacre on a grand scale, to gain control of the town by
means of a treacherous surprise attack from within must also be
counted among failures. A partial or complete deportation of the
town s inhabitants to Russia took place on five occasions
(1558,1565,
1571,1707
and
1708).
The year
1708
became a true apocalypse when
by systematic destruction the departing Russian troops turned the
town into a field of smouldering ruins. In its extent and thorough¬
ness the destruction was even greater than what befell Tartu in the
Second World War.
Compared to other Estonian towns during the period covered
in this book Tartu s fate was without doubt the severest with only
Narva being able to provide any competition . However, on the
European scale this was nothing extraordinary. In a paradoxical
way it may even be said that despite everything fate was merciful
to Tartu. It should suffice to mention the sack of Magdeburg in
1631
in the Thirty Years War
(1618-1648).
Tartu never became another
Magdeburg; nevertheless, it came close to it on many occasions in
history.

Summary
The period of
1558-1708,
which confronted Tartu with difficult
choices and grave ordeals, was also a period of change for both
the Baltic region as well as Europe as a whole. Internal crisis in the
Habsburg
dynasty in the middle of the 16th century led to the divi¬
sion of Charles V s world empire and could also have been one of
the reasons why Old-Livonia, which was formally part of the Holy
Roman Empire, and its problems were not given sufficient atten¬
tion in the imperial court. Moreover, the one and a half centuries
observed here witnessed the rise and fall of the Kingdom of Sweden
as well as, in terms of the Occident, the transformation of a periph¬
eral and unknown
Moscovia
into Russia and its rise to becoming a
European great power. All of the aforementioned processes echoed
in Tartu s life. Thus this book is not a local history in the traditional
sense; the added framework of general history aims to demonstrate
that even events of seemingly local significance have wider inter¬
national reflections.
