The book presents the fortunes of the former site of the Extermination Camp
Tre¬
blinka
II in
1943-1989.
The text is divided into two parts, the first one sheds light on the
process of commemoration of the post-camp grounds, while the second is dedicated to the
means used to this end. The starting point was a closure of the camp in
1943,
an estab¬
lishment of a farm with the
Wachleute
(watchmen) settled there, and then their escape from
the post-camp grounds. At that time the
Treblinka
site became a place of exploration and
searching for „treasures by various local and visiting people. This is depicted as the „El
Dorado of
Podlasie
after
1943.
For better understanding of the problem a section is de¬
voted to the shady business of getting richer at the time before the liquidation of the camp.
There is also the description of the visits of successive committees, most frequent by the
end of the
1940s
and by the end of the next decade, when the question of protection and
commemoration of the post-camp site was raised again. There are presented and analysed
the first plans
-
from the
1940s,
by
Alfons Zielonka
and
Władysław Niemiec
-
to estab¬
lish in the whole area of
Treblinka
II a monument prospect. The following part is dedicat¬
ed to a new project of the monument by
Franciszek Duszenko
and Adam
Haupt,
with the
description of its erection and presentation of artistic values. This part is concluded with
the description of the first ceremony that commemorated the victims of the Extermination
Camp
Treblinka
II.
The second part of the book presents the process of commemoration through state
propaganda. On the basis of history handbooks, encyclopaedias, lexicons (which were jux¬
taposed with the publications in foreign languages to make a comparative analysis of their
content), guidebooks and albums there is presented the image of
Treblinka
deliberately
formed by the authorities of the Palish People s Republic to function in the Polish people
consciousness and which became fixed in popular memory. The process of commemora¬
tion of the place is depicted on the example of postage stamps,
