SUMMARY
This book is the first attempt to write the history
of Serbian rhetoric. Apart from some marginal works and
certain articles in periodicals, there is not any complete
survey of the development of Serbian rhetoric until now.
Serbian rhetoric dates back to the Middle Ages,
originating from the best tradition of Byzantine and
classical Greek oratory. Serbian popular rhetoric is
probably much older but a very little is known about it.
Serbian rhetoric was of a predominantly spiritual
character between the
XII
and XV century. The most
important protagonist of this period was
Sveti Sava.
Accordingly, it developed in all the genres that were
included in religious literature. It was only in the XV
century that it gradually became temporal. The authors of
the period began to enrich the genres with their own
attitudes and emotions and orations became
commemorative and practical in tone. Likewise in certain
rhetorical genres one could notice the presence of oral or
bardic literature. The development of mediaeval literature
was simulteneously followed by the development of
popular rhetoric. The traces of popular rhetoric are today
recognizable in many epic poems or special verbal genres
of oral literature such as popular toasts or uncanonized
prayers.
In the XV century, literary and cultural activities in
Serbia under the Turkish occupation were in sharp
decline. The prosecution of priests and monks, burning
273
and robbing of monasteries and sacred things lasted until
the renewal of the Patriarchate in
Peć
in
1557
and
somewhere even until the days of the First Serbian
Uprising in
1804.
The development of rhetoric among the
Serbian population inhabiting the areas on the north of
the rivers Danube and
Sava
was more intensive.
Consequently, in the rhetoric within this part of Serbian
population we registered the greater interest in some
theoretical and profane aspects in this field. Gavril
Stefanović Venclović
and Dositej
Obradović
were the
most significant rhetoricians of this period.
At the end of the
XVII
century, the Sebs from the
territory of the province of
Vojvodina,
Hungary and
Romania began to acquire the first political experience.
Many intellectuals, priests and merchants participated
eagerly in the political life of this period trying to
improve the position of their ethnic community. The
formation of civil society was followed by the intensive
development of political and commemorative oratory.
The most prominent rhetoricians in this region were
Sava
Tekelija,
Jovan Subotić, Laza Kostić, Svetozar Miletić
and in Serbia, after the First Serbian Uprising, one can
mention
Božidar Grujović, prota
Mateja
Nenadović
and
later on
Jovan Ristić, Pera Todorović, Svetozar
Markovié
and others.
The period between
1903
and the beginning of
World War I, popularly called the golden age of Serbian
democracy, is the time of continual development of
Serbian political oratory. King
Petar
I s
rule left the mark
on the period which gave many famous orators such as
King Peter himself,
Stojan
Novaković, Dragiša Lapčević,
274
Jovan Skerlić, Dimitrije Tucović and Petar Kočić
in
Bosnia.
The years between two World Wars we called the
time of regress. During this period there were no such
outstanding rhetoricians as before and one could notice
the lack of interest in rhetoric and speech
-
making. The
form of spech was not being taken so much care of and it
seemed that no one cared very much to produce a refined
piece of oratory. Within the last century four rhetorical
manuals were published (written by
Mrazović, Stenja,
Maletić
and
Vujić).
In the same period we have Branislav
Nušić s Retorika.
However a great number of academic
oratories were produced in those years.
In the period of socialism the art of speech
deteriorated. Especially the political oratory influenced
negatively the entire public communication. The speech
of the politicians of that time was called wooden
speech by theorists. The most important person of this
period was Tito and his party collaborators.
The chapter entitled The Revival of Spiritual
Rhetoric refers to the arrival of some educated priests and
monks that brought back the glory of spiritual rhetoric. In
this group of orators we included
Nikolaj
the bishop,
father Justin, Hrizostom, Varnava Atanasije the episcps,
Amfilohije the archbishop and dr
Lazar Milin.
We paid special attention to the deveopment of
political oratory in the time of multi-party system
establishing. In this period the political rhetoric is
enriched and differentiated so thet we might distinguish
between the styles employed by the supporters of ruling
party and the opposition. We analyzed the speeches of
275
Slobodan Milosevic,
Vuk
Draskovic,
Vojislav
Koštunica
and
Zoran Đinđić.
In the last chapter of the book, dealing with the
period of contemporary oratory, we pointed out the
phenomenon of the greater interest in rhetoric. This
renewed interest became evident in 1980 s after the
establishment of multi-party system. Rhetoric is again
included into high schools and universities curricula,
numerous rhetorical competitions are organized and its
genres are being constantly enriched. We also
emphasized the fact that public speech is of growing
importnance in public meetings, newspapers, public
institutions etc.
