When a plant is first described, an abbreviation of the botanist s name is appended to the Latin binomial,
e.g., Masdevallia infracta Lindl. If the species is moved to another genus, the name of the original botanist
is put in parentheses and that of the botanist moving the taxon is appended; e.g., Alaticaulia infracta
(Lindl.) Luer. When ex appears between two authors of a plant name, the first name credits the individual
who first provided the taxon s name. The name following the ex refers to the author of a later, validating
reference. For example, Masdevallia coccinea (Linden ex Lindl.) attributes the name Masdevallia coc-
cinea to Linden, and specifies Lindley as the author of the later, validating diagnosis.
