In
1679,
Etienne Baluze
discovered, in the
scriptorium of the abbey in Moissac (France), a manuscript
which would bring significant details to the modern
historiography with respect to the beginning of the fourth
Christian century, thus becoming the most important
document of the Great Persecution and of
Constantine
the
Great s ascension. The name of the work is
De mortibus
persecutorum, attributed to Lactantius, a political
pamphlet of incontestable literary value, whose author aims
at showing that all the persecutors of the Christian religion
had a terrible and well-deserved death.
Apart from its historical importance, the work DMP
is also important (mainly) for its literary value. Being
written shortly after the Edict of Milan , DMP is, on the
one hand, as we have already mentioned, a pamphlet about
the persecutors, and, on the other hand, a panegyric for
Constantine
the Great, bringing an authentic testimony of
the existence of a literary Christian Latin at the beginning of
the 4th century. The first Romanian edition of DMP,
published in
2000,
drew our attention and raised our
interest, especially with respect to matters of textual

criticism and to its paternity. Then, comparing the most
important critical editions published so far, we have noticed
major differences, sometimes inexplicable, between the
interpretations which the editors gave to one or another
text passage, often at the expense of alienating the original
text, in the absence of solid philological arguments. In spite
of outstanding interpretations, like J. Moreau s
(1954,
in
Sources
Chrétiennes )
or J. L. Creed s
(1984,
Oxford,
Clarendon Press), the most important critical edition of
DMP, apart from later notable modifications of the text, is,
undoubtedly, that of Samuel Brandt, at the end of the 19th
century, which was also the main source of the last critical
edition of DMP, that of
Alfons
Städele (2003).
Thus was born the idea of writing a philological
study of DMP, which might be the pointing start when
modifying the original transmitted text, through the
Colbertinus manuscript, often difficult to understand. From
this idea we thought of adding a vocabulary analysis, which
would highlight the semantic characteristics of a pre-
Nicaean doctrinal terminology and some lexical
characteristics of DMFs author as well. It goes without
saying that such analysis calls for clearing up some aspects
concerning the authorship of this work, by comparing,
when necessary, similar terminology from the dogmatic
works of Lactantius.

some details about Lactantius life and work , The

paternity of DMF , The content and historical context of
DMF and, finally, The date and place of writing of DMF .
The philological study focuses on three main aspects:
1. An analysis of the philological
characteristics of Colbertinus manuscript, as a new
critical edition cannot be justified but by fully
understanding the difficulties of the original manuscript.
Therefore, we tried to group the usual abbreviations
according to grammatical norms and then to point out
those errors that have slipped in the text, because of
successively hand copying. Also, in order to validate or
invalidate the presumed existence of an archetypal
manuscript in scriptio
contìnua,
we used the method of
dividing the text in sentences, choosing those fragments
which are difficult for the interpretation, especially the
stylistic one. In the same chapter, dedicated to philological
problems, we included some examples of critical analysis,
suggesting new conjectures and emendations for a new
critical edition of DMP.

Following the study of the manuscript, we had in
view the analysis of the morphosyntactic level of
DMP, in Henri Goelzer and Max Bonnet s style, and, as far
as possible, taking into consideration the classification into
grammatical fields made by Albert Blaise s in his Handbook
of Christian Latin. Accordingly, I tried to emphasize those
grammatical aspects specific to Christian Latin, in all its
complexity, which had slipped into DMP, with or without
the author s deliberation.

Undoubtedly, the most considerate part of this
work is the semantic analysis of DMP. What we had in
mind was, on the one hand, the semantic fields grouped in
the Christian doctrinal vocabulary, and, on the other hand,
those strictly related to the content, grouped around the
idea of persecution. In each section of the chapter, we
showed to what extent does the author of DMP make up
new terms or gives new meaning to words; to what extent
does the biblical lexis influence the doctrinal terminology in
DMP, taking into account the fact that the biblical quotes
lack completely; to what extent does the author take into
consideration what the Latin Christian writers, especially
Tertullian, did before him with respect to lexis and
semantics; last, but not least, I compared the doctrinal
terminology in DMP with Lactantius dogmatic work. In
such analysis, I am aware of the fact that works like DMP,
which does not have an explicit dogmatic content, cannot
be used as a main source in establishing general doctrinal
principles of the author, because of little examples.
Nevertheless, on such examples, we can establish whether
the author adopts the new language imposed by the Latin
translation of the Bible and enriched by the authors of the
first Christian centuries and, more than that, we can
establish what relates those examples with Lactantius
dogmatic work, in order to contribute to elucidating the
problem of authenticity. For the same reason, we chose to
analyze the terminology related to persecution and

persecutors, after the persecution stopped and when the
freedom of speech was at its highest peak.
Apart from the historical and theological importance
of this work, the study we have carried out aims primarily
at offering a philological support in order to contribute to a
new critical edition of the transmitted manuscript,
Colbertinus. Therefore, where possible, apart from the
chapter dedicated exclusively to the analysis of the
manuscript, we did not hesitated in making critical
comments or suggestions, which we related to different
semantic or morphosyntactic aspects of certain words.
In conclusion, we hope that this book might be
considered as the most important instrument in
establishing a new critical edition of Lactantius text and, at
the same time, a useful handbook to all those who want to
familiarize with the literary Latin of the 4th Christian
century.
