THE NEGRO VANGUARD in the words of the author, is “a testament of hope, a reaffirmation of the writer’s belief in the essen tial health of the American demo cratic tradition.” It is, in essence, a study of leadership—the leaders of the Negro race from 1770 to the present who fought their way against prejudice, poverty and ig norance to take their places among the country’s notable men and women. In an attempt to answer the question : “What raised these par ticular individuals above their fel lows ?” Mr. Bardolph has examined family backgrounds, economic and community environments, educa tional influences, the role of ac cident, the importance of sympa thetic white people, et cetera. As a backdrop for each successive gen eration of leading Negroes, the main currents of the country’s so cial development are sketched and the progress of the Negro race as a whole summarized.
As a consequence, the negro is as deeply moving a human story as it is informative as social history. Using three arbi trary divisions in time, Mr. Bardolph has shown the influences that worked for or against Negro success in each and the inexorable, though very gradual, movement of the Negro from the backwaters in to the mainstream of American life. THE NEGRO VANGUARD is an im portant book and a timely one. It is objective and compassionate — a sound scholar can be both—and from beginning to end there is a clear note of progress.
