Summary
Jonas Aistis (1904 07 07-1997 06 13) is a master of Lithuanian ele-
giac poetry. In the years 1927-1932, he studied Lithuanian philo-
logy at the Faculty of Humanities of Kaunas University. In 1936,
Jonas Aistis obtained a scholarship from the Ministry of Educa-
tion to continue his studies at Grenoble University. In 1944, he
defended a doctoral dissertation „L Etude linguistique sur les
traductions en ancien provençal des textes évangéliques . In 1946,
he moved to the USA, taught Lithuanian at the College of Ma-
rianopolis, but since 1958 he worked at the Congress Library in
Washington.
The first poems were written by Aistis in 1926, subsequently,
in 1929, he -published a big sheaf of poems in the students maga-
zine Pjüvis (Profile), followed the principles of neoromanticism
promoted by the publication the antinomy of an ideal and reali-
ty, the synthesis of traditional rural culture and modem expres-
sion, the stylistics of emotional confession and the isolation from
the trend of avant-garde. The first collection of poems Eilérasciai
(Poems) was published in 1932, the fourth Uzgesç chimeros akys
(Faded Eyes of a Chimera) was a National prize-winner of 1937.
A traditional concept of romanticism that a poet is both a
spokesman of the national world outlook and a guardian of the
life of the nation was transferred by Aistis to the subtle sphere
of internal experience and intimacy vividly coloured by the tints
of defeat and resignation. The premonition of an imminent ca-
tastrophe of Europe and the failure of the Lithuanian state has
pierced through the romantic images of medieval colouring (the

royal court and the nobility) as well as the grand dukes of Lit-
huania. The subject of Aistis elegiac poems is a frustrated, tired
and doomed man. „As gyvenu agonija, geltonu rudeniu / Drau-
ge su merdincia, su mirstancia Europa (In an agony, in fading
autumn / I live alongside the decaying Europe). Having per-
ceived pain to be the primordial principle of existence, Aistis
soaks the entire structure of a poem with a note of utter sorrow
featuring a declining tone, low and tender rhythmic stresses, a
fading accent of nostalgia. Sorrow became a predominant featu-
re of his lyrics, even his aesthetic platform. However, the poet
found his poems written „in deep sorrow as bright „as a child s
laughter . He was full of the theory of catharsis revived by ro-
manticism which claimed that suffering fosters poetry, while sor-
row and beauty are inherent notions of poetic value („The more
touching the song the more striking it is ). For the poet a poem
was a declaration of remarkability that could be equated with a
fairy tale (the cornerstone of lyric). It is the moment of remarka-
bility which becomes the poem s culmination gradually resulted
by emotional strain, images, rhythmical melody. The state of being
astounded in the presence of beauty rather than a mere seman-
tics of some idea became the axis of the piece of poetry.
Aistis lyrics is very close to the tradition of the sung Lithu-
anian poetry a purified lexis, an equilibrium of syntactical seg-
ments, the chords of repetitions, slow rhythm, prolonged vo-
wels, soft sound tone. The main principle of Aistis creation is,
therefore, the subjugation of poetic experience, visual material
and composition for the achieverment of the rapid interior mu-
sical tone. Having taken over the stylistics of a soothing word
of pre-war lyrics (K. Binkis, B. Sruoga), Aistis added to the ten-
derness of poetic language a touch of subtle tremor. Under the
influence of the poetry of P. Verlaine and A. Blok, he succeeded
in the perfection of the intimate tone of narration. Aistis poem
is a vivid crisscross design of half-tones and dotted lines, which
in a subtle harmony and by smelting physical contours of a word
in the flow of sounds manages to link a tiny detail of an image

of nature with an emotional outburst, an elegant diminutive
with a pianissimo of the rhythm. He endeavoured the interior
purity of poetic language by showing his disapproval of rude
tone, the mess of associations, and a broken line. Taking the
example of old French poetry, the man- nature parallel, so com-
mon to Lithuanian poetry, is squeezed by Aistis in the canon
forms of a sonnet and a rondo. He succeeded to join a fragile
song intonation with the sense of a precise form fostered by
European poetic culture thus providing a Lithuanian poem with
a novel feature of elegance and spontaneous artistry and finally
liberating Lithuanian lyrics from the logistic doctrinality of Mai-
ronis - type school.
The purity of crystal expression and the laconicism of com-
position predominated the post-war collections of poems Ne-
miino ilgesys (The Longing for the Nemunas, 1947), Sesuo buitis
(Sister Everyday Life, 1951), Kristaliniame karste (In a Crystal Cof-
fin, 1961), in which a desperate longing for motherland and man s
loneliness in a strange world are distinguished. A light vibra-
tion of a sonorous phrase was replaced by a calm, moderate
tone, whereas fixed and sharp lines were put in place of the
fragility of a miniature image. With an attempt to achieve the
lucidity and objectiveness of a classical form, Aistis has rejected
a vibrating note of intimicy, the one which had enthralled the
readers of his pre-war verses.
Aistis is one of the originators of Lithuanian essayistics he
published three books - Dievai ir smutkeliai (Gods and Pensive
Christs, 1935), Apie laikq ir zmones (On Time and People, 1954),
Milfordo gatves elegijos (The Elegies of Milford Road, 1957), which
reveal the painful experience of historical fate of the nation, vi-
vid plasticity of reminiscences, suggestive impulsiveness of the
thought and slender simplicity of the style.
Having created a sonorous, elegant poem, full of genuine
grievance, elegiac harmony, romance-like tone, Aistis was enor-
mously influential to the young poets of the 1940s and 1950s; his
poem was considered by them the synonym of the very poetry.
