Biological globalisation
Biological globalisation is a very significant, but underexposed
form of globalisation. It deals with the spreading of plants,
animals and micro-organisms across the globe. Driven by
climate change as well as growing long-distance trade and
traffic, biological globalisation is increasing swiftly.
Biological globalisation has produced great benefits for
humanity. The present world population of
6.5
billion people
can only survive thanks to the higher yields and richer nutri¬
tional variety made possible by introduced crops.
However, there is another side to the story. This book con¬
tains numerous examples of species introductions, both inten¬
tional and accidental, that have had unforeseen impacts. In
the past, bio-invasions have caused mass mortality of humans
in regions such as Europe and the Americas. Today, bio-invasi¬
ons arc a major cause of the global decline of biodiversity. And
the economic costs exceed
1000
billion dollars per year. Most
studies on the future of life on earth concentrate on habitat
destruction, exploitation and climate change. But bio-invasi¬
ons may turn out to be just as harmful.
The authors of Biological globalisation, two biologists and a
medicai
epidemiologist, aim to draw attention to this fascinating
phenomenon, its causes, its multiple impacts, as well as possible
control strategies. The book is equally fascinating for those
interested in globalisation, biology, conservation, geography,
public health, history or economy. The scope is global, with
special reference to the Netherlands.
