Während Hiroshima zunächst von Bombenabwürfen verschont bleibt, bricht am 6. August 1945 mit dem Abwurf der Atombombe die Hölle auf. Ein Anime mit eher schlichter Animation und grob stilisiertem Charakterdesign, dem dennoch zutiefst bedrückende, kaum erträgliche Szenen gelingen. Der autobiografisch gefärbte Zweiteiler schildert das Grauen des Angriffs, das Sterben der Familie und den Überlebenskampf in der verseuchten Stadt und entwirft im zweiten Teil mit dem Überwinden des Leidensweges des einzig überlebenden Jungen eine positive Utopie.
