This is the first book ever to be published in the
West on the art of the great Czech photographer
Josef
Sudek.
One of the great masters of twen¬
tieth-century photography
—
ranking alongside
Atget, Man Ray, Steichen,
Stieglitz,
and Weston
—
Sudek's work has rarely been seen outside
Czechoslovakia. Because of his habit of making a
very small number of prints from his negatives
—
in many cases only one
—
few have ever been
available to museums or collectors.
Over the years almost all the photographs
selected for this book were sent by
Sudek
to his
friend and former assistant
Sonja Bullaty
and
her husband,
Angelo
Lomeo,
in New York. It was
Sudek's wish that these photographs would form
a comprehensive collection of his work outside
Czechoslovakia. In
1976
during Miss Bullaty's
last visit with
Sudek
in Prague,
Sudek
agreed that
this collection in New York should form the basis
for a book and exhibit.
Sudek
was born in
1896
and spent most of
his life in Prague, living through very difficult
times
—
two world wars and years of political up¬
heaval. Fighting in Italy during the First World
War he was seriously injured and lost his right
arm. While recovering he photographed his war
veteran friends and subsequently decided to dedi¬
cate his life to photography. Sudek's hauntingly
beautiful photographs—from the early smoky
atmospheric pictures of the
1920s
to the later,
more surrealistic images
—
seem even more re¬
markable in light of this handicap.
Reproduced by Roto/Sadag in their finest
Swiss
gravure
process, these photographs are a
celebration in honor of a great artist and represent
the most complete reference available to the work
of Josef
Sudek
in both selection and faithfulness
to the original image.
SONJA BULLATY's
devotion to photography
took on greater meaning after she first met Josef
Sudek
in Prague after Worid War II. Now a
recognized and busy American photographer liv¬
ing in New York, her work together with the
work of her husband, photographer
Angelo
Lomeo,
has been widely published, with major
photographic essays appearing in numerous vol¬
umes of Time-Life Books and such magazines as
Audubon, Life, Horizon, Infinity, Country Jour¬
nal, Eastman Kodak International, Travel and
Leisure, Camera
35,
Popular Photography, Pho¬
tography Annual and others. Both her work and
her husband's have been exhibited in major gal¬
leries and museums throughout the United States
and Europe including The Metropolitan Museum
of Art in New York. Their latest book is Vermont
in All Weathers and they are currently at work
on two new books, Our New York and a collec¬
tion of their nature studies. |
