Summary
The book undertakes to present a problem of fundamental significance for the historical
process of Poland, i.e. a question of the relationship between the state authorities and the Cath¬
olic Church and the faithful. On the basis of me abundant source material of both the Church
and State institutions and organisations provenance, the individual segments and determinants
of religious life of the Bydgoszcz inhabitants were analysed.
In the
1970s
Bydgoszcz was a town resiliently growing in terms of territory and demog¬
raphy, regarded as an unofficial capital of the region. At the beginning of the decade there was
a tangible growth of living standards, accompanied by consumer aspirations of the inhabitants
and sympathy for me Gierek s team. A large and
stricte
industrial municipality, serving as a coun¬
terbalance for intelleaual
Toruń,
mirrored all the processes characteristic of a socialist town of
the post-industrial age. The process of atheisation and
laïcisation
of social life accelerated, espe¬
cially under the rule of
Józef
Majchrzak, a first secretary of the Voivodship Committee of the
Polish United Workers Party
(PZPR),
avowed opponent of the Church and at the same time
a man on friendly terms
Józef
Szydlak and probably Edward
Gierek
himself, whom he support¬
ed in the crisis of December
1970.
An important assumption that accompanied the research was to inscribe all problems in¬
cluded in the present study into the broad context of the country reality during the period of
Edward
Gierek.
The authoress attempted to thoroughly analyse the attitude of the state author¬
ities towards the followers of the Roman Catholic Church. On the example of the problems
widi construction of sacral buildings, functioning of catechistical units and activity of student
ministry an analysis was made of typical methods of deactivation of the most active Catholic
Church members, used by the authorities and oppressive apparatus.
Throughout the whole decade of the
1970s -
contrary to the theory of normalisation of
the relationship, the policy of the communist regime consistently pursued the aim to deprive
the Camolic Church of its decisive role in shaping national outlook and values drawing on Ju-
daeo-Christian tradition. Probably the main purpose of such religious policy was to supersede
the idealistic ideal- i.e. Camolic
modei
of upbringing and education and replace it in all spheres

of public life by the model compulsory in the countries of people s democracy
-
materialistic
ideal, based on the principles of Marxism and Leninism. The process of atheisation of the peo¬
ple significantly accelerated after
1976 -
such an important year for the history of the Polish
opposition and social resistance of the Poles to the communist regime.
Although the years or
1970-1980
are sometimes identified with the process of normalisa¬
tion of the relations between the state and the Church, nonetheless in the opinion of many his¬
torians this interpretation is not justified. Indeed, in this period the authorities waged an ag¬
gressive and consistent campaign for a complete
laïcisation
of social life. Particularly, there were
special restriction put on religious practices, activities of student ministry and regular catechisa-
tion of children and teenagers. In addition, the authorities successively rationed the number of
construction permits issued for the purposes of sacral buildings. Characteristic were also full-
scale attempts to disintegrate and divide the clergy and mass invigilation of bishops and rank
and file priests. It is worth to remember that at the end of the

of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

supervising the Security Service (SB) responsible for invi¬
gilation, exposing and fighting against the hostile activities of the Roman Catholic Church
-
there was established an Independent Group D. Its main purpose was to disintegrate the Church
structures. In
1977
the Group
D
was transformed into a separate Department VI.
The aim of the book was to confront and present the efforts undertaken by the faithful
of the Catholic Church who wanted the freedom of religious worship and exercise on the one
side, and on the other
—
the activities of the regime that were to restrict the scope and influence
of the Church on the nation. Thus the book reflects the problems of invigilation of the Catho¬
lics by the Security Service and the threat of various sanctions (loss of work or prospects of pro¬
motion). And in the light of the active participation in religious life of a majority of Bydgoszcz
inhabitants the pointlessness of these efforts is unmasked. The above determinants influenced
the book structure.
Thus, the bulk of the book pertains to the important issues of the attitude of a new gov¬
erning team towards the sacral construction, catechisation of children and young people, the
faithful and clergy of Bydgoszcz parishes, secular organisations, Catholic associations, dissenters
and non-believers. In addition there are also brought up the questions of religious life and dis¬
crimination of the faithful during the December

and the first pilgrimage of the Pope to the
home country.
Since the history of the Catholic Church in Bydgoszcz during the period of communist
dictatorship has not been researched yet, the authoress made use of the general literature per¬
taining to the relations between the state and die Church, Master
s
theses on history of indi¬
vidual parishes and abundant source materials. Undoubtedly the most valuable are the docu¬
ments from the collections of the Archives of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN)
-
of
the
Delegatura
in Bydgoszcz and the Head Office
-
concerning in majority the Catholic clergy,
Episcopal curia, catechistical units or student ministry. Next, the records of the Office for De¬
nominational Affairs from the Central Archives of Modern Records, consisting of the corre¬
spondence between the provincial Department for Denominational Affairs and the Episcopal
curia. Of special value are also the records of the individual parishes and visitation records de¬
posited in the Archdiocesan Archives in
Gniezno,
as they include not only the annual reports
of parochial administrators about activities and religious life but also the correspondence writ¬
ten to the curia by the official authorities and by the faithful.
