Summary
The book contains the collective papers delivered during the con¬
ference organized on 15th and

June,
2005,
in
Poznań,
by the
Institute of History of the Adam
Mickiewicz
University and the Com¬
mission on Women s History of the Committee of the Historical Sciences
of Polish Academy of Sciences. The above mentioned Commission under
the leadership of the late lamented Professor Anna
Żarnowska
has been
active for over
10
years, trying to inspire and coordinate the historical
studies on the broadly understood women s topics in Poland. This time
the main topic of the conference was focused on the women s activity in
the professional and economic organizations in the 19th and 20th cen¬
turies. This question has not been popular in Polish historiography so
far. Therefore, the articles published in this volume can be considered, to
some extent, as that of a pioneering character.
The following articles are the modified and elaborated versions of the
texts presented during the conference. The Authors, preparing their texts
for publication, changed them sometimes and included the results of
open discussions and some suggestions expressed by the editors of the
volume. Chronologically, the papers cover the period from the mid-19th
century until
1939,
however, the Authors focused mostly on the turn of
the
19*
and 20th centuries. The earlier epoch has been presented in less
detail, similarly the interwar period.
The papers dedicated to the post-partition era mainly deal with
Russian Poland, in particular Kingdom of Poland, and only two of them
deal with
Poznania
(Great Poland), then under Prussian rule. Un¬
fortunately, only one Author
(Agata Mirek)
deals partly with
Galicia
(Austrian Poland). Most of the articles are focused on the Polish groups.
Only in
Agnieszka
Janiak-Jasmska s paper can one can find some
information about the social status of professionally active women in the
Jewish milieu.

Summary
The volume begins with the vividly composed text of
Tadeusz
Stegner
dedicated to
Lucyna Ćwierczakiewiczowa,
a very popular author in the
second half of the 19th century of various guide-books for women,
especially a cook book, still reprinted.
Stegner
not only extends our
knowledge about her biography, but first of all tries to present this very
exceptional person from a completely new perspective. As he rightly
stated,
Ćwierczakiewiczowa
significantly influenced the everyday life of
the inhabitants of the Polish lands through ideas popularized in her
publications, contributing to modernization of the households. In ad¬
dition, at that time, she belonged to a rather small group of successful
women (also successful financially). She achieved her position thanks to
their literary activities.
Then, three other papers present the activity of the female pro¬
fessional and economic organizations in the Kingdom of Poland at the
turn of the
19*
and 20th centuries in various social groups. First,
Ewelina Kostrzewska describes in very detailed way the program and
activity of the United Circle of Woman Landlords
(Zjednoczone Koło
Ziemianek),
established in
1905.
This organization aimed to propagate
rational methods of household management. The members of this circle
tried to think about it in the terms of their civic and patriotic duty and
considered it as the fundamental condition of the rise of the level of the
economic and national life of the Polish society. As it was stressed by the
author, the woman landlords were also very active among peasant
women which resulted in general modernization of the village in the
Kingdom of Poland.
The next paper, written by
Agnieszka Janiak-Jasińska,
shows the
beginnings of the change in the professional position of female bureau
staff. The expression of the change, first of all, was the establishing of the
Association of Polish Women Working in Industry, Trade and Accounting
(Stowarzyszenie Kobiet Polskich Pracujących w Przemyśle, Handlu i Biu¬
rowości)
legally registered in
1906.
Some of the interesting paragraphs of
her text, based on variety of sources, the Author continued up to the
interwar period. We find the same in the text written by
Agata Mirek.
She
portrays the contribution of female monastic communities
-
Sisters Ser¬
vants of Jesus
(Zgromadzenie Sług Jezusa)
and Sisters of the Name of
Jesus
(Zgromadzenie Sióstr Imienia Jezus)
to organizing women s asso¬
ciations and trade unions, predominantly among servant-girls and
craftswomen (Christian Union of Handicraftswomen
-
Chrześcijański
Związek Rękodzielniczek Dźwignia ).
She also pointed out the impact of
the Capuchin friar, Rev.
Honorat Koźmiński
in this movement; and as
mentioned before, she included some passages about the
Galicia
in her
text.

The following two texts deal with the Grand Duchy of
Poznań
(Great
Poland). The first of them, composed by
Grażyna Szelągowska,
intro¬
duces the results of preliminary studies on the women s activity in
professional and economic organizations in Scandinavia, mainly in
Denmark, and in
Poznania
in the second half of the 19th century. The
Author compares the legal conditions of activity in these areas and in
what extend women used existing law. She also tries to analyze the
reasons, why women s activity in economic field
-
was so limited in
Poznania
and Denmark. As a clear sign of such limited women s activity
one can consider the small number of women s professional and eco¬
nomic organizations. Although this text is rather general in its form and
presents mostly hypotheses, it certainly provokes to thought and should
inspire further research in this field. The second paper, written by
Zofia
Ćhyra-Rolicz,
based mainly on detailed archival research, depicts the
facts regarding the limited participation of women in various co-ope¬
ratives from their creation in the second half of the 19th century until the
beginning of the World War II, focusing on the interwar period.
The volume concludes with an article

also based on extensive
archival research
-
written by Joanna Dufrat. The Author presents the
role that during

years of its existence played the Union of Women s
Civic Work
(Związek Pracy Obywatelskiej Kobiet)
-
an organization
established in
1928
by women activists originating from intelligentsia
-
in promoting of women s
entrepreneurship.
The promoting of women s
activity in the economic field which was the main aim of its program
claiming to prepare women for full participation in the social life.
One can perceive a common question in all above mentioned texts:
how a gradual entry of women into the job market in the Polish lands
influenced their broader participation in various kinds of economic and
professional organizations and the change of their role in these orga¬
nizations until the formation of independent women s associations. In
fact, the papers included in the current volume
-
however not every
Author stated it clearly in the narrative
-
provide an element of the
answer to very important question: in what extend did the rise of the
economic activity of women in the period under consideration aid their
emancipation?
