SUMMARY
Theory of culture in Poland has a long tradition, but it expe¬
riences the greatest development in the 20th century when there
is not only a great number of theoreticians of culture but also an
abundance of research methods which all contribute to the fact
that the Polish theory of culture finds itself in the top ranks of
the world theory of culture.
Theory of culture in a wider sense includes theory of art and
aesthetics. That is the reason why there is a place in this book
for Stefan
ókiewski, a
theoretician of literature, Mieczaw Porb-
ski, a historian and theoretician of art, Roman Ingarden and
Stefan
Morawski,
both aestheticians. With the exception of
Roman Ingarden s text, which in its content pertains exclu¬
sively to aesthetics, other texts examine the ralationship
between aesthetics and social reality or, more precisely, aesthet-
ics s inclination to address the problem of the social role of art.
I inteded to as objectively as possible follow the develop¬
ment of the Polish theoretical thought about culture, with spe¬
cial attention given to certain researh centers and schools as
well as prominent theoreticians. Several important theoreti¬
cians have not been explored in great detail, but that does not
affect the general representation of the rich theoretical contribu¬
tion.
This text provides a cross section of a number of research
centers and contributions by individual theoreticians, starting
with the founders of theory of culture Stefan Czarnowski,
Flo¬
rian Znaniecki, Józef
Hcaasiski, Stanisaw Ossovski,
Bogdan
Suchodolski, Stefan
Szuman, Antonina Koskowska,
Zigmunt
Bauman,
Jerzy Kmita,
as well as the younger researchers cen¬
tered around the Warsaw and
Poznan
research institutes.
Emphasis on these centers does not diminish the importance of
299
others, most notably the
Krakov/,
Katowice, Lodz centers which
in recent times are becoming increasingly active and ambitious.
Within the Polish theory of culture a number of distinct
movements have developed which are more developed and
advanced in comparison to the Western European theory of cul¬
ture. In recent times, there is an increased activity in represent¬
ing and communicating of postmodern experiences as well as in
forming of understanding of current transformations in culture.
The biggest dicrepancy in this book represents Kazimjerz
Brandys,
which is literary in nature, and I included it because
that is my first published text dealing with Polish theory and
because the essay broaches a number of important questions in
cultural theory of contemporary Poland.
The majority of texts has been published either as a preface
or afterword to my tranlations or translations by others; some
are being published for the first time
There are other ways in which the Polish theory of culture
can be written about. I chose this way because I was led to it by
the chronological order in which the texts have been organized
as well as the character and nature of the texts themselves.
