Summary
The book you are holding is the result of research and observations made while collec¬
ting and publishing materials to catalogue Jewish cemeteries. The onsite inventorying
was performed by a team of young people guided directly by the author, and continued
since early
1990s.
The basic task of the book is to make the reader familiar with an art that is as entire¬
ly unknown as incomprehensible for residents of Poland. The places where we can see it
expressed is special, and for that reason the book presents questions related to the basic
trends in the development of the Jewish tomb, obviously, against the background of chan¬
ges in funerary rites.
The roots of Jewish sepulchral art reach back to the ancient times, and for that reason
we must frequently refer to archaeological materials, reports and accounts from onsite
research and archaeological exploration.
The question of special interest for the author is the religious qualification of the very
existence of Jewish sacred art. Moreover, the subject is of crucial importance also for the
understanding and development of Christian art. The book presents this subject as a qu¬
estion that the author hopes to develop further thanks to constructive discussion.
Presentations of sepulchral art
-
which in some cases may be considered the master¬
pieces made by non-professional stone cutters
-
are brought together with the discussion
of the significance of individual religious symbols. This question, of major importance
for the understanding of the essence of Jewish sepulchral art, was presented with regard
to the literature available. In the case of a few questions, the interpretations of the me¬
aning of the given symbol was broadened, and the multi-layer quality of recognition and
reception of the work of art were taken into consideration. Discussed besides these was
also the universal meaning of individual symbols, with full awareness of the fact that so¬
metimes the universal aspects of a given religious symbol are visible through meanings
that are typical for a given cultural milieu: in this case the Jewish culture.
The sepulchral art from the
19th-century
researched cemeteries is worlds apart from
that of the
20th-century
ones.
The basic difference between the tombs from the first half of the 19th century and tho¬
se from the first half of the 20th is the different form of the stela, whose many types are
present only in the 20th century. Well noticeable is the evolution of the form of the tomb
itself: from the stone stela enclosed with various forms of arched coping to the architec¬
tonic brief of
a façade
contained in the relief modelling of the front of the slab. Summing
up, it can be assumed that there is, primarily, a reduction of decorative elements typical
for the 19th century on the framing of the sides of the tomb and in its coping. Instead of
this, there are a large variety of distinctive tomb types. As it has earlier been mentioned,
this evolution influenced the vertical stela form, which was beginning to be dominated

The illustrations are to provide the most comprehensive assistance in becoming fami¬
liar with sepulchral Jewish art. It is to visualise the basic differences between the forms

character of the work of art and the permanent disappearance of the folk (non-profes¬
sional) art of stone working and to make a broader range of people aware of the pheno¬
menon of the colourful tomb painting permeated with symbolism. The waning of the
original art of stonemasonry occurred within less than a century. In the
19th-century
ce¬
metery in
Będzin,
there are what we believe to be eminent examples of
non-
professional
art. The
20th-century
stonemasons whose works grace the cemeteries of
Olkusz, Sław¬
ków,
and
Czeladź
were but manufacturers keen on mass production.
All these are but a small fraction of conservation work whose basic objective is to do¬
cument the transient heritage of the bygone generations.
