Inspired by the work of Ajit Singh, this volume explores how behaviour in financial
capital markets affects real sector economic performance and in particular, how
it affects growth
-
both the growth of business corporations and the growth of
whole developing nations. In discussing this issue, this book builds on the bridge
which Singh created between the domain of business finance specialists and the
disciplines of industrial and development economics. The economics of corporate
mergers, the ideal blueprint for developing stock markets, and a model for
financial market behaviour that will advance the economic welfare of all, rather
than a handful of successful speculators, are also themes which are examined and
advanced here.
With contributions from a wide range of experts, this volume presents an over¬
view of contemporary issues in the financial and industrial sectors, with fresh
insights as well as an exploration of the changes experienced in these sectors since
Ajit Singh first covered the subjects. This is an essential read for all scholars and
policy-makers interested in the current issues facing finance and industry, as well
as those who have followed Ajit Singh's life and works.
Philip Arestis is University Director of Research, Cambridge Centre for Economics
and Public Policy, Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, UK.
He is also Adjunct Professor of Economics, University of Utah, US; Senior Scholar,
Levy Economics Institute, New York, US; Visiting Professor, University of Leeds,
UK; and Visiting Professor, School of Oriental and African Studies
(SOAS),
University of London, UK. He was a member of the Economics and Econometrics
Research Assessment Exercise panel in
1996
and in
2001,
and Quality Assessor for
the Quality Assessment Exercise in Economics of the Scottish Higher Education
Funding Council, the Welsh Funding Councils and of the Higher Education
Funding Council in England. He was a member of the Council of the Royal
Economic Society (RES), and Secretary of the RES Standing Conference of Heads
of Department in Economics
(CHUDE).
He is currently Vice-Chair of the ESRC-
funded Macroeconomics, Money and Finance Research Croup. He has published
as sole author or editor, as well as co-author and co-editor, a number of books,
contributed in the form of invited chapters to numerous books, produced research
reports for research institutes, and has published widely in academic journals.
John Eatwell is President of Queens' College, Cambridge, and Professor of
Financial Policy and Director of the Centre for Financial Analysis and Policy at
Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK. He has authored and edited
a wide range of books on economics and finance, including The NewPalgrave: A
Dictionary of Economics
(1987
edition), and The New Patgrave Dictionary of Money
and Finance (both co-edited with Peter Newman and Murray Milgate). |
