Explanation of Stonehenge Plans
Buried features revealed by excavation or topsoil stripping,
which are attributed to different phases in the development of
the monument, are shown on a series of diagrammatic plans
in the Stonehenge sections of this book (For example, Fig.
3.38
on page
75).
In each plan the areas that have been excavated
are shown in white, while unexcavated areas are contrasted
in pale grey. Features attributed to the period under discussion
are shown in black and may be extrapolated in outline. Other
areas which are either obscured (such as by fallen stones), or
have been disturbed by features of a different period, are
shown in mid grey. Thus, the extent of features pertinent to
the discussion of a particular period can be viewed (in black)
against the limitations imposed on the evidence by the extent
of excavation (in white). The conventional numbering of the
stones is shown in the Index (Fig.I.
