THE SCIENCE AND PSEUDO-SCIENCE
OF LITHUANIAN (BALTIC) STUDIES
Summary
There are not only professional linguists, but also ama¬
teur linguists. They are people of various specialties,
who had never studied linguistics, and are
autodidacte
in the field. Most often they write about questions of
the origins of nations (ethnogenesis). Because they are
not able (this is impossible for them) to determine the
existence or non-existence of a genetic link between
similarly sounding words in various languages, they de¬
clare that all these words have a Lithuanian origin. Re¬
lying on such assertions, they create the most fantastic
hypotheses about the origin of the Lithuanian language
and nation. They go so far as even to proclaim that the
Lithuanian language is the very oldest in the world,
the primary language, from which other languages
were derived, etc. These pseudo-linguists publish their
fantastic conclusions in the popular press, usually in
newspapers (they are not published in scholarly publi¬
cations) and thus their „brilliant ideas are readily
available to the general public. Society is fascinated by
them. And how can one not be moved by the extraor¬
dinary extolling of one s nation and language!

The scholarly works of real linguists are not accessible
and usually incomprehensible to broad layers of the
population. For these reasons there is a real need to
publish the achievements on questions of ethnogenesis
not only in scholarly literature, but also in the press
available to everyone so that they become a counter¬
weight to the pseudo-science, so that society would not
be misinformed.
This booklet is intended to describe the writings
of pseudo-linguists, to point out their most erroneous
assertions and show the lack of grounds for their asser¬
tions in the light of the science of historical (diachron-
ic) linguistics. An effort is made to make clear the lack
of justification for the pseudo-science method
—
to
pay attention only to the similarities of the sound of
words
—
and to inform the reader in a popular manner
about the methodology of scholarly investigations of
language history. This is done in a dignified manner,
not insulting the individuals who are firm believers
in the correctness of their proclaimed ideas and are
trying to extol their nation. Most of the attention is
devoted to the works of amateur linguists in the last
few years, only briefly mentioning earlier works. Most

Matulis,

For the convenience of readers at the end of the
book there are three indices: analyzed words, tripes

OF LITHUANIAN (BALTIC) STUDIES
Summary
There are not only professional linguists, but also ama¬
teur linguists. They are people of various specialties,
