The celebration Szczecin Days took place in Szczecin on
13
and
14
April
1946.
The rally of youth, known as
Trzymamy straż nad Odrą
was part
of it. The purposes of that gathering embraced:
1)
manifestation of the attach¬
ment to the new Polish western border;
2)
promotion of an attractive place
for settlement in the western and northern part of the country;
3)
stressing
the Polish position ahead of the planned peace conference;
4)
summarizing
the account of the first year of managing in the western and northern part of
the country;
5)
extention of some actions taken before the referendum asking
questions, from which one concerned the western border.
Approximately
50
thousand people participated in the celebrations.
Among the youth organizations the most numerous were scouts (around
10
to
15
thousand), then as follows:
ZWM
(association of fighting youth) with
4,7
thousand people,
Organizacja Młodzieżowa Towarzystwa Uniwersytetu Ro¬
botniczego
(the organization originating from the association of the working-
■class university) with one thousand members,
Związek Młodzieży Wiejskiej
Wici
(country-side youth
Wici )
with one thousand participants and finally
Młodzież Demokratyczna
(democratic youth organization) with
600
persons.
The schedule covered sport competitions, concerts, films and theater
spectacles. On the square, which was called at the time pi.
Teatralny
there was
built in a cornerstone of a new monument under the title
„Trzymamy straż
nad
°drą
( Keeping guard on
Odra
River ). Among the invited celebrities
came:
Bolesław
Bierut, Edward
Osóbka-Morawski,
marshal
Michał Rola-Ży-
Kiiersld,
Stanisław
Grabski,
and other members of the government, ambas¬
sador USRR, United Kingdom and France.
Stanisław Mikołajczyk
came as
well.
On the evening of
13
April
1946
a widely known incident occurred
on
Wały Chrobrego,
when the youth spontaneously claiming „Mikolajczyk ,
„Mikołajczyk
broke off the scheduled program of the celebrations and
Bo¬
lesław
Bierut descended from the
VIP
tribune. In revenge the scouts were
banned form the parade the next day. In the context of the above mentio¬
ned events a legend has begun, which took rise in April
1946
and is vivid till
nowadays. It states that during the celebrations two scout girls were killed.
From the gathered documents and witnesses statements it is ought to say
that on the
15
April a train accident took place. Unfortunately it happened
immediately after the transport of youth, returning from the celebrations,
left Szczecin. As a consequence of that accident one girl named Maria has
died, and the other girl named
Zofia
and an unknown boy from
Toruń
suffered
from wounds.
With regard to the purposes set out in the beginning of the celebra¬
tions, it should be noted, that in such a specific and difficult surroundings they
succeeded in organizing a mass manifestation with thousands of guests, who
came from the whole country, to organize accommodation and afford for all
the participants as well as to organize the transportation. Owing of assigning
Szczecin for the celebrations to take place, it could take advantage of presen¬
ting itself as an attractive place, which is worth coming. However it failed to
present the political unity of the society as well as the mass support for the
authorities. The incident concerning
Stanisław Mikołajczyk
brought a contra¬
ry effect. It seems that the celebrations have not fuffilled the intended will
of supporting the propaganda of the Polish foreign policy. It had more of an
internal influence than external effect.

The celebration "Szczecin Days" took place in Szczecin on
