Structure versus Culture.
On Conditionings of Emancipation Orientations
in Polish Society
In the presented publication the author is aiming to demonstrate,
that against trendy ideologies concerning individualization of social
life, decline of traditional structures organizing collective life, and
weakening relationships between the individual and the
macrosocial
level, our everyday choices are not chaotic, random or having no direct
influence on the social reality. The choices that people make, despite
all the changes that have taken place in the world, are nowadays as
much set in a specific social context as it used to be

ago. Consequently, they can be described as actions conditioned by
mechanisms functioning in public life and constitute, as they have
before, an element of a greater whole. The fact, that some social
processes have undergone transformations or that the general context
of the situation in the world has changed, is a matter not requiring any
specific evidences. This does not imply, though, that the general rules
of social life depicted by the classics of sociology have ceased to exist.
Paraphrasing exhortations of
Jürgen Habermas,
who appealed not to
put aside the project of modernity, one must state, that it is better to
draw conclusions from any mistakes which accompanied the classics
of the social thought than to reject as out-of-date the achievements,
reflections and categories used by the social critics of the 19th and
20th century. Certainly such concepts as social progress, classes, class
differences, system reproduction and many others remain topical and

maintain freshness in the modern world and are hardly considered

in accordance with popular opinions leading in the cultural-political
mainstream

extinct.
The author defends his thesis depicting social diversity of acceptance
and openness to social changes.
Observing the social phenomena around us, contemplating future
and present political affairs, trying to understand people's social world,
simple questions often occur to us: What controls the behaviour of
individual persons?; Why some are more prone than others to submit to
dominant orders?; What force influences making such choices?; What
makes some people more open to new ideas, while others feel nauseous
or fear at the smallest change? Why in some environments and societies
it is easier to manipulate people and keep them in developed schemes,
while in others the ability to act independently and self-organization is
much stronger.
Piotr Żuk
is searching for sociological suggestions and explanations
for the questions listed above. Therefore, the author is reflecting on
the degree to which peoples' culture (and values connected thereto),
and position of an individual in a structure (and related businesses) can
decide on emancipated or conservative orientation of specific societies.
To what degree are the classical categories of structure and culture
helpful nowadays in explaining human bevaiours and choices?
Contemplations on the significance of structure and culture in creating
human behaviours circle around the question of social background
for postulates and freedom projects: who can play the role of an
emancipation subject in today's Poland? The question of emancipation
subjects is at the same time a question of social actors who can be the
carriers of modernization in the Polish conditions

who can reject dominant trends, create new ideas, criticize fossilized
schemes?
The author bases his reflections on empirical research

questionnaire
interviews and free interviews with workers, representatives of the
middle class and persons from the elites. Respondents' answers cover
issues of preferred political models, economic systems and choices in
private and moral life.
The book is recommended not only for sociologists and political
scientists, but for anyone interested in the mechanisms of public life,
