and at the dawn of the 20tn cen¬
tury, rulers from both Serbian dynasties zealously carried
out one of very important duties of a ruler: visiting of the
prominent regions of the homeland and getting to know
their subjects. The goal of this study is to inform the read¬
ers about when and how the
Obrenović
and
Karadorđević
families visited the region of
Uzice,
how they had been greeted and how
their subjects had seen them off.
In the year of
1841,
Prince Mihailo would not enter the county seat
due to bad relations with residing princes. He summoned the repre¬
sentatives of the local, rural authorities and at an assembly he had a
discussion with them in one remote village from the region of
Uzice.

years later, during daily street clashes of two
etnic
groups and two con¬
fessions, Prince Mihailo accepted the invitation to visit the town on the
river
Djetinja.
As a mature
statestman,
the Serbian sovereign used this
visit as an opportunity to observe the situation in that region, which had
been proved as a useful thing after some time when he liberated Serbian
towns from the Turkish garrisons.
King Milan came to the county of
Uzice
for three times; first time
as the juvenile prince with his regents. As a freshly crowned king, in the
year of
1882,
he passed through the peripheral villages of
Uzice,
refusing
to enter the county seat, he was so
indignat
because of the unpleasant
demonstrations of the villagers in the village of
Brajkovići.
In May of-
1899,
he triumphantly entered
Uzice
as a commander of the Serbian
army, accompanying his son, the young king of Serbia.
The residents of
Uzice
greeted King
Aleksandar Obrenović
for three
times as well. Immediately upon the coup
ďetat
in
1893,
he made the of-

visit of the County of
Uzice
in order to get to know his subjects in
that part of the country. The visit in
1899,
when he came together with
his father, had the purpose of laying the foundation stones of the capital
objects at town, the hydroelectric
-
power station on the river
Djetinja
and the army barracks at
Krčagovo.
The last time when he came with
é
his spouse, queen
Draga,
was in
1901.
In their desire to smooth out the
bitterness, due to the scandal caused by queen s false pregnacy and the
alienation of the European courts, they had been alienated by the god¬
father family from St. Petersburg; and the unfortunate royal couple, on
their route around Serbia, reached
Užice
as well.
The first and last time that King
Petar Karađorđević
came to the
region of
Užice
was in
1905.
With lots of care the old king desired to
peer into every corner to get to know all the beauties of his country that
he loved so much and where he returned after

years of his exile; he
wanted to talk to as many people as possible, especially because he had
the old trusted friends in
Užice,
such as
Mališa Atanacković
and Milan
Đurić.
It was the most meaningful and best organized visit for a sove¬
reign.
The rest of visits of crowned persons from
Karađorđević
dynasty
were of private character; in fact they were just casual passages during
the private journeys. King
Aleksandar Karađorđević
came here for the
first time in
1905.
So, even though it was a private visit without parades,
archways and an automatic fire, people could not hide their genuine joy
when they saw the young prince. The next time he came it was just be¬
fore he got killed. It prevented him to build a summer house in Zlatibor.
Two years later, his widow, on her travel from Sarajevo to
Topola,
got off
the train in
Uzice
and continued her journey in the royal car which she
chauffeureď
herself.
It is quite obvious that the rulers of both Serbian dynasties consid¬
ered the region of
Užice
as important for their survival; it is a region
where they had both supporters and opponents. All those visits had a
purpose of getting closer to the people, getting of their trust and sym¬
pathies. But the differences are obvious. Just as the differences in rul¬
ing are obvious, the rulers also differ in their way of addressing to their

people. The
Obrenović
dynasty never showed any desire or inclination
towards limiting of their power and they tended to keep their power
freely, which brought them in conflict with both law and institutions
and also it could be felt in their immediate contact with their subjects.
That was particularly true for King Milan, having in mind his inappro¬
priate reactions. His hot temper was widely known and on one occasion
he spoke to the residents of
Uzice
in a very belligerent and brusque tone,
thus punishing them for their carelessness and for the way in which they
wished to to state their demands to them.
Unlike him, King
Petar Karađorđević
truly ruled and behaved as a
consistent constitutional ruler, respecting all liberties of people. Many
people thought he even displayed exaggerated democratic attitude even
when he met his people, often making surprises and avoiding the activi¬
ties which were in accordance with protocol. In the
Karađorđević
family
there were no such belligerent tones, indeed, especially because the ex¬
perience and connections of King
Aleksandar
and people of
Uzice
were
related to wartime events when they together went through an ordeal
which brought them together in a unique way, which was not the case
with the rulers from the
Obrenović
dynasty.
However, neither the first nor the latter rulers underestimated the
significance
ofthat
region in which they tried hard in their respective
ways to get as many supporters as possible and create a stronghold for
long survival of their respective dynasties.
