In the modern world, the ideology of Islamic fundamentalists is of
central importance, but it is often distorted or misunderstood by the
world media. In this detailed study, Andrea
Nüsse
provides an
insightful analysis of the Palestinian Hamas movement's world-view
and shows how the theoretical framework developed by thinkers
like Hassan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutb and al-Mawdudi is applied to a
specific political, social and economic context. It presents the
Islamist position towards recent events, such as the Gulf war, the
Madrid peace negotiations and the Hebron Massacre and helps to
dissipate myths surrounding modern Islamist movements and their
overwhelming success as opposition forces in the Islamic world.
Using first hand source material exclusively in Arabic which has
never before been systematically explored, particularly the
magazine Filastin al-Muslima, this book provides a rare case-study
of fundamentalist thought

examines the origins of the ideas
which are integrated into the Islamist system of thought. In a
fascinating investigation, the author identifies which parts of Islamist
thought derive from traditional Islamic teaching, and which
constitute an integration of mainly Western concepts. By exploring
the means by which Hamas presents such "alien" ideas as
democracy and nationalism as authentically Islamic concepts, the

years, she has been writing and editing material on the Muslim-Arab
world for the political section of the Berlin daily newspaper

Tagesspiegel.
