Brison Family Journey to Grozny
1939-40 -
Bill Brison
My parents, Bill and Marion Brison, my younger brother, Davy and I (also called Bill
Brison) went to Grozny, Chechnya, USSR in
1939
and returned in
1940.
My youngest
brother, Allan, was a baby and was left in the care of my mother s parents, Katie and
Stanly Wilber. Grozny was a remote outpost of Imperial Russia. Besides being a great
adventure, it was a defining moment for our family life. Allan came to feel a part of it.
Mom wrote home to her small town newspaper, The Allegany Citizen, which reprinted
her letters in full. Life Magazine gave extensive coverage. I was interested in going to
Church, but was told the Church was closed. It wasn t closed, but it was dangerous for
Russians to attend and only the most dedicated and brave went. I saw Grozny as a nine
year old who played with the street urchins and had access to a Soviet society denied
to American adults by Stalinist terror.

Grozny Revisited
1991 -
Bill and Peggy Brison
In
1991,
my wife, Peggy, and I returned to Grozny. We had the support and
encouragement of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert
Ruńcie.
We spent two years
arranging for the trip with the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church.
One reason for this trip was nostalgia. The Holy Grail and more important factor was
to find out if and how the Church of St. Michael and All Angels had survived
70
years
of communist rule. We wanted to know more about the remarkable parish priest who
served from
1917
to
1940
and who kept the Church open when churches all over the
Soviet Union were closed and bulldozed. Incredibly, in
1991,
we found a thriving and
growing Church in the midst of yet another brutal war. We didn t find anything about
that priest but found his re-incarnation in Fr.
Piotr.
