The Political Repression of Czechoslovak Citizens in the Soviet
Union
(1918-1945)
In line with the project of the Grant Agency Czech Republic no.

„The Czechs, Czechoslovak Nationals, inhabitants of the Czech Lands in the USSR
1918-1956:
Their persecution, Its Forms and Extent the research was carried out
in central national and military archives of The Russian Federation, in archives of
Russian museums and non-governmental organizations and in some archives in
Ukraine and Poland. The findings were compared with results of the research car¬
ried out in Czech archives. The research bore out preliminary hypothesis about
the extent of political persecution of the Czechoslovak nationals as well as other
inhabitants of the Czech Lands, including members of Czech minorities in the
USSR during the period of
1918-1956.
It considerably extended existing knowledge
regarding forms, developements and mechanisms of the persecution. The object
was to analyse the main persecuted groups
-
people kept in gulags and prisons,
deportated, unlawfully executed, interned and POW of Czechoslovak origin. As a
part of the project, computer database was created comprising over two thousand
names (individual victims of persecution), which will be run by Silesian Regional
Museum in
Opava.
One of the outcomes of the research is the following collection
of entries.

study Czechoslovak Citizens in the System GUPVINKVD-

vakia in
1945-1950
deals .with the situation of prisoners of war.and the internees
in the Soviet Union after the Second War World, It examines the ways the people
being regarded as Czechs and Slovaks together with members of other nationalities
with Czechoslovak citizenship got into, the Soviet captivity and internment. It inves¬
tigates the registration methods, their numbers, structure and territorial location as
well as their living conditions in the camps, the prisoners and the internees death
rate and the attitudes of soviet authorities towards them. It deals with the circum¬
stances of their return to the native country and diplomatic negotiations regard¬
ing repatriation. It mentions some more general implications which characterize
phenomenon of captivity and internment in the USSR. In this context it specifies
the situation of German prisoners of war in Czechoslovakia in years
1945-1950.
It
draws attention to some Actual and methodical problems connected with handling
Soviet provenience archive materials, especially specific agendas involving prison¬
ers of war, the internees and captives in the system UPVT/GUPVL

Jiří

study „The Internment of Czechoslovak Soldiers in the USSR in
1939-1941
was carried out in Russian archives and took notice of Eastern Czecho¬
slovak Army Group internment in the Soviet Union from the perspective of the
National Commissariat of Internal Affairs, which monitored closely soldiers politi¬
cal opinions. It describes the conditions of the internment in
Kamenec
Podolsky,
Olchovce, Jarmolince, Oranky and Suzdal and the fortunes of soldiers who stuck
around
Český Kvasilov.
NKVD authorities s supervision over the internees was pos¬
sible mainly due to wide espionage in the camps and their surroundings. NKVD
had their informants even among Czechoslovak soldiers. Reports on anti-Soviet
spirits and attitudes were conducive to imprisonment of several soldiers by order of
Soviet authorities. However, the unit as a whole wasn t persecuted.
Extensive material study of
Zdenek Vališ<(
Czechoslovaks in the NKVD Camps
and Prisons During Second World War presents collection of documents from
Military Central Archive Fond and the Archive of Department of Home Affairs from
the period of April 15th
1940 -
June 15th
1944.
Reports of military authorities describe
the situation of the Czechoslovak military group interned in the USSR, exemplify
the role of Soviet intelligence service and their efforts to recruit new collaborators.
Till the end of June
1941,
after the German attack on the Soviet Union, there was an
increasing effort to gather all of the Czechoslovak nationals with the aim to create
Czechoslovak Military Unit in the USSR. Appeals to release interned Czechoslovaks
together with the Gulag s prisoners and prisoners of war were appearing on a regular
basis. The workers in the Czechoslovak military mission in the USSR strived to bring
forward declaration of amnesty, pursued the process of internees release, mapped out
the situation and living conditions in the camps, and gathered information about the
number of imprisoned and deceased Czechoslovaks. They dealt with
thé
question of
Czechs from Volyn and Kiev, Slovak prisoners of war and especially the fortunes of
thousands of refugees from Carpathian
Ruthenia,
who were not released from the
camps because Soviet authorities regarded them as Hungarian nationals. Only after
prolonged diplomatic proceedings were they liberated.
l
Stanislav
KokoSka s study Activities of UPVI NKVD Authorities in the
Ter^
ritory of Czechoslovakia in
1944-1945
briefly describes system of Soviet prison
camps and the course of Red Army operations in the territory of Czechoslovakia.
After the front had passed there was mass preventive imprisonment taking place.
Many German (in Slovakia mainly Hungarian) nationals, Russians and Ukraini¬
ans (emigrants that had settled down there before war), as well as Czechs, Slovaks,
Ruthenians
and Jews were captured. The total number of interned civilians is still
impossible to determine. It was possible, however, to identify some transports from
the beginning of
1945
and ascertain some information about the number and struc¬
ture of people being released from the internment.

Zdeněk Jirásdťs study
„Repatriation Problems of Czechoslovak Citizens
from the USSR is based on the sources of Soviet provenance found in the State
archive of the Russian Federation. It sets out to examine the perception of repatra-
tion by some Soviet competent agents. It focuses on several mass actions having
reparation character together with the discussions about them by the Soviet and
Czechoslovak side. It brings out several cases of the repatriated persons percepted
in a specific way by the Soviet side. It dealt with the problem of
„eşalon
and special
congragation camps for the repatriated before their departure. It also mentioned
the last repatriation phase in the 50s and stated that the length of the repatriation
itself signalizes how much it had in common with the persecution.
